There is something rotten in the UN

And it’s about time we fix it.

As I previously stated in this post, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has not only issued a blatently biased report on the whole danish cartoons incident, It has also used a Red-colored (in allusion to Denmark) piece of LEGO on their new anti-racism poster. The implication is clear: Denmark is now, according to the UN, racist. Nevermind that Islam is not a race, nevermind that muslims in Denmark were never discriminated against in terms of finiding jobs or social status, and nevermind that the whole crisis was started by a danish Imam who urged the islamic world to economically hurt the country that gave him shelter and a home, using false evidence and fake cartoons. That is not the point as far as the UN is concerned. Their latest report indicted the danish government and intellectuals as racist and inciters of “the clash of civilization”.

This, and pardon my french here, is bullshit. I know it, you know it, everyone knows it. It is, as usual, easier to punish a small country of 5 million to appease a billion muslims, than to actually tell the billion muslims that freedom of speech is a universal right, that sometimes unfortunately gets abused, but can not be temperd with for the sake of people’s feelings. But then, the UN was never one to exhibit moral clarity on anything, so naturally they went with the path of least resistance and branded Denmark as racist.

Fine. If you only respond to the language of pressure, then pressure is what you are going to get.

One of my readers left the following comment:

I’m sending to as many suitable recipients as I can, the following email.
Email addresses for your own (and other) Permanent UN Missions at:
http://home.online.no/~oelpeleg/email.htm
================================================
On their website http://www.ohchr.org/english/events/racism/ the Office of
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights have today (21 March 06),
under the banner “Fighting everyday racism” published a poster and download
showing a picture of a clearly identified Danish product (Lego) beneath the
legend “Racism takes many shapes”.

This is obviously designed to denigrate Denmark (and the Lego company) in
the context of the recent dispute in which Denmark and Danish people have
been vilified, and their commercial interests and embassies damaged by
concerted attacks from many Islamic countries and organisations for a
perceived slight by a Danish newspaper.

Many people will be outraged by this flagrant attempt of UNHCHR to reignite
the wicked anti-Danish campaign which has already caused so much harm.

This malicious publication must be immediately withdrawn and an appropriate
apology be issued.

And I agree. So I am going to send this e-mail to the local UN office and to this e-mail address as well…

…so that they may get the message loud and clear!
And I urge you to do the same.

We pay their salaries, let’s hold them accountable for their actions.

  1. JordanR Says:

Did the UN report happen to include the Islamic response:

    1. Holding up signs saying “Butcher anyone who insults Islam” and “Prepare for the REAL Holocaust”
    2. Burning down churchers
    3. Killing innocent Christians

I guess its only racist if its a cartoon. If people are threatened and killed, its not worthy of the UN’s precious time.

  2. JordanR Says:

And while I am at it, which Islamic state should Denmark apologize first to?

The one that executes gays because they exist?
The one that executes girls because they were raped?
Or the one that executes Muslims for converting to Christianity?

I am madder than a yack in heat!

  3. The Sandmonkey Says:

    Jordan,

    *the sandmonkey channels Cheri O’teri*

    Simmah Down Naw!

  4. Jason Says:

The UN is bullshit and useless. I wish the US and other freedom loving countries would resign from it and evict them from the property in NY. We can send millions of emails at them, sadly it will no good. They will never change.

  5. Einherjar Says:

I don’t believe in fixing the UN, international diplomacy will be international diplomacy, and rogue state envoys will be rogue state envoys, regardless of the framework they operate in. Remember that they can easily abandon the framework and operate outside the forum if the framework isn’t conductive to what they are trying to do.

I don’t believe in leaving the UN either, there are benefits to be attained trough international diplomacy and the undesierable elements won’t stop their activity just because we won’t participate.

I do believe in recognizing it’s flaws though, and in putting an end to the worship of this institution by internationalists.

  6. Aryeh Says:

I think you are misreading the poster: it is pro Danish.
The puzzle pieces are all interlinked, while the lone red lego is discriminated against for being different. The implicit message is “DON’T DISCRIMINATE AGAINST THE DANISH” :-)

  7. Luke Says:

To be honest, I think the message of the poster is the other way round: The Lego cube is the one against whom the others unite and discriminate.

Anyway, the UN guy criticizing Denmark also criticized Switzerland in January for the way the local police allegedly treats Africans. So I guess everybody had a good laugh when he presented his new report - or rather real life satire.

  8. Sean Shalor Says:

If the UNHCHR poster was deploring racism, then it wouldn’t mention any particular party.
I thnink the implication is clear and deliberate.

  9. husamx Says:

it’s just the Lego cube can’t join as a part of the jigsaw community and so it’s left alone, this is the definition of discrimination, i think this poster holds a big message and should be raised everywhere.

  10. husamx Says:

The creator of this poster tried hard not to point at any specific nation in his/her definition of discrimination, so the lego and jigsaw used instead of humans.

  11. Ian McCulloch Says:

    husamx said:
“the lego and jigsaw used instead of humans”

Do you really think there is anybody who does not know that Lego is Danish ?
Or that the legendary pro-Islamic UNHCHR is equally innocent of that.
All pigs fed and ready to fly SIR !

  12. thewiz Says:

The UN has beena dabcale for decades. But it has done a lot of good over the years and should not be abandoned. Instead, it need to be reofromed top to bottom. And this may happen in the not too distant future.

First of all. The term of Khaffi Annan is will expire at the end of the year. This will be an opportunity to remove him and his corrupt cronies. Reorganize and put in safegaurds to improve acconting and accountablitiy.

Second, the biggest problem with the UN is that he majority of its members are tyrants and despots of one stripe or another. These countries obviously will vote against any US policy that puts their hold on power at risk.

But democracy is spreading throughout the world and the the number of democratic members of the UN iis approaching 50%. As democracy spreads through the ME and into Africa, democratic countries will take control of the UN. Democracy has been back sliding some in South America but hopefully, that is temporary.

At some point within the next decade, the democratic members will take comtrol of the UN. This could have a profound affect on how the UN is managed and what it stands for. It just may become a stalwart of democratic ideals, human rights, world economic reform, and the rule of law instead of “big man” rule. It could be a tranformational event for the world as the UN may finally live up to its ideals.

  13. slimpickens Says:

The UN is already run by capitalist democracies. I don’t think some African tyrant has nearly as much sway over the UN as the Tyrant that are the five permanent members of the security council. These guys are the largest arms suppliers to the world and will always have ultimate control over the UN unless ‘Permant member’ and veto powers cease to exist. These guys are the tyrants.

At the same time, I’ve always seen the UN as a group that tries what it can to improve the world within the confines of it controlling members. My opinion of the UN has changed after reading this post. It’s shameful how hypocritical and blind people can be.

  14. elengil Says:

… call me jaded. I’m *so* not surprised by this decision.

Denmark can proudly take it’s place beside Israel as being recognized as the most racist and horrendous nation on earth.

Doubtless there will be an attempt now to make Denmark abandon the evils of its democratic society that inherantly allow such blatant racist and islamophobic displays and Saudi Arabia will, with UN observers, instill a true sense of dictator-monarchy into the country that will bring true freedom to all.

I hate the UN. They don’t need to be reformed. They need to GO.

What appals me most though is.. doesn’t the US have veto power in the UN?? Where the hell was our veto on this?!? Or maybe we just don’t have it in the *snerk* Human Rights commission. Isn’t that run by Lybia?

The end of the world is indeed nigh.

  15. ArmyArtilleryWife Says:

I am totally willing to believe the lego represents Denmark…just because it seems too perfect to be a coincidence.

If it does represent Denmark, it is anti-Denmark…because this is the UN.

Even if it does not represent Denmark, the poster should be protested for being a confusing, uninspiring, and generally crappy piece of advertising.

  16. ArmyArtilleryWife Says:

elengil–I don’t think this rises to the level of a Security Council decision. If the US had veto power on ALL UN resolutions and business, there wouldn’t be so many anti-Israel resolutions.

  17. Babs Says:

I blame this mess on Western democracies, especially the U.S. State Dept., that so spinelessly aquiessed to Islamic demands. Had the Western nations stood up for Denmark’s right of free speech, even when it insults, there would have been no basis for “the next level”. We are now going to institutionalize Islamic outrage.
John Bolton, pick up the white courtesy phone…

  18. Babs Says:

And, just so that your Muslim readers son’t misunderstand; do you really want your religious sensibilities treated like a sick little sister that needs to be comforted constantly or, are you as a people able to stand up strong and healthy in this big world?

  19. elengil Says:

    ArmyArt.Wife:

“If the US had veto power on ALL UN resolutions and business, there wouldn’t be so many anti-Israel resolutions.”

Unfortunately, that is not a result of not having the *power* to veto, but abstaining from using it. The US has abstained from it’s veto in (i believe the number was) 2/3rds of the resolutions against Israel, only vetoing 1/3.

Including the farce that was the resolution to condemn the Palestinian children killed by Israel but pointedly refused to make any such similar condemnation of Israeli children killed by Palestinians.

  20. elengil Says:

    http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/myths/mf13.html#g

Yep, 2/3 abstain, only 1/3 veto.

  21. slimpickens Says:

I have to admit that i’m a little concerned about their “strength and health”. There is alot of fanatics that seem to not value the life and worth of anyone that doesn’t have the same beliefs. There is a huge difference in flexibility between the a large percentage of muslims and people with western ideals. I’m worried that we will never be able to find a middle ground and the momontum is increasing. I now see the outspoken and intolerant muslim as someone who will never function in the modern world because they are living life with ideals that have not changed for centuries. While some religions have been able to adapt (albeit reluctantly and some not well at all ex. strict roman catholic), the lack of diversity in the arab world seems to have not forced any change at all.

  22. elengil Says:

I now see the outspoken and intolerant muslim as someone who will never function in the modern world because they are living life with ideals that have not changed for centuries.
    ========================

I would disagree only to the extent to say they have in fact regressed rather than remained stagnant. I believe the Arab cultures were actually *better* in history than they are now.

Perhaps it is because now that this is a global world rather than a local one, any power they used to have is in start contrast to their impotence now, or perhaps it is in reaction to the “immoral” west that they are pushing themselves away from anything that resembles the west at all..

But this isn’t stangnance, it is regression.

  23. Sean Shalor Says:

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
Have we ever been surprised that the UN is a creaky decrepit organisation. I’ve been on dozens of insignificant committees and I know well that consensus is impossible and a miserable compromise is the best you can ever do. You just have to lobby to make yourself heard. There is no such thing as corporate morality and everyone there is seeking there own advantage. That is the mess that we call democracy - it’s not beautiful but it works better than most other ways. The one thing that can upend it completely however, is organised subversion - and some believe it lurks …

  24. K from Oslo Says:

According to danish newspaper “politikken” the UN are remouving the poster after complaints from Denmark. Presumably, the use of lego in the poster was a “clumsy” decision. Considering that the preperation of such a campaign would have preceded the toon crisis (it takes ages, you know), I think this is true, but the UN should still have been smart enough not to use it. Irrespectable of the lego block representing the excluded part in the poster, surley they can’t be so dum that they don’t realise the symbolism of the poster given the current situation, can they? Even if it wasn’t intended to give out such a message, it’s clear that it does.

  25. FreeSpeech Says:

    Congrats..
UN just withdrew the “anti-racist poster”.
I still believe we need the UN for international coorperation etc..

  26. slimpickens Says:

    elingel

    Good point.

  27. Erik Says:

It is still possible to download the poster from the website…

    http://www.ohchr.org/english/events/racism/

So it is not withdrawn yet.

Do they know that a danish politician was jailed for slandering Muslims in Denmark a few years back?

  28. bitman Says:

According to JyllandsPosten the poster was supposed to be removed “tuesday night” from the site. I assume that’s danish time which means it’s about overdue now.

    http://www.jp.dk/indland/artikel:aid=3631096
    (article in danish - sorry).

But Lego is still waiting for an answer to why they were used …

  29. scubajim Says:

I sent the following letter (of course, it bounced the email address was bogus, so I found another one)

Dear United Nations Committee on Racism,

Your add on ending racism has come to my attention (http://www.ohchr.org/english/events/racism/) While I fully support ending racism and racial discrimination I do not support the implied link between racism and the Lego Corporation. I do not work for Lego, but I do volunteer work for a program called First Lego League. The First Lego League is a program to encourage teams of students (world wide) ages 8 to 14 to design robots to accomplish some engineering goals. I am involved with the local organization in Oregon, USA called ORTOP. ( http://www.ortop.org) It has been my experience with ORTOP that they encourage ALL groups to attend and they encourage ALL participants to learn and grow. I am a local tournament drector and in the past two years (the two years I have participated) I have seen all manner of participants. My first year a young group of women won first place. My second year a small tight group of Hispanic students won. Both teams had some traits in common; they worked very hard and they worked together. (ORTOP doesn’t discriminate on participants racial or gender make up.)

I encourage you to clean your own house first instead of impuning the reputation of a corporation that makes educational toys for children. It is pretty sad that you stoop so low.

    Sincerely,

  30. Abu Nudnik Says:

Interresting, isn’t it? Denmark is held responsible for the behaviour of its free citizens but Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Iran protest that they can’t be held responsible for the terrorist guests to whom they provide comfort, relief, money, logistical help, diplomatic support, etc….

  31. elengil Says:

Denmark is held responsible for the behaviour of its free citizens but Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Iran protest that they can’t be held responsible for the terrorist guests to whom they provide comfort, relief, money, logistical help, diplomatic support, etc….

… well.. yeah. I mean, of course. What are you getting at? You aren’t really saying that’s wrong are you?!?

Remember collective punishment is wrong, unless it’s collectively punishing the west. Then it’s OK.

“It is, as usual, easier to punish a small country of 5 million to appease a billion muslims.”

Sounds like the way the UN and the EU treat Israel with regards to her Muslim neighbors.

An organization is only as good as it’s members. So, what do you get when you have an organzition full of dictators, tyrants, and thugs?

  35. Erik Says:

Funny thing, Denmark became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council January 1 2006.

Is there any connection to the cartoon controversy and Denmark’s seat in the Security Council?

Naa, I am just being paranoid, there is no Muslim plan to take over the world bit by bit..

  36. ArmyArtilleryWife Says:

    elengil-

Security resolutions against Israel represent but a handful of UN resolutions against Israel.

While I doubt the objectivity of this site, they count 450 GA resolutions: http://www.masada2000.org/UN.html

The US does not have veto power in the GA.

  37. elengil Says:

SC Resolutions are binding UN resolutions. General Assembly resolutions are more to state the world (heh) opinion rather than to pass a binding resolution.

I guess that being the case there would be no reason for nations to have veto power over GA resolutions.

The UN, in general, makes me sick.

  38. thewiz Says:

Erik: The chairmenship of the Security Council is rotated through all memebers. Each mamber gets to be chair for a month. Denmark will the chair next month, . . .. .just when Iran’s violation of UN Nuclear issues is to be voted on. Coincedence??? Perhaps, perhaps not.

  39. Sean Shalor Says:

We need the UN as a forum but not as a policy-making body. In today’s world, Islam uses traditional diplomacy not for negotiation, but as a booby trap.
    The rules have been rewritten.
    They don’t want coexistence.
    They don’t want peace.

  40. alexander6 Says:

K from Oslo- The preparation for the summit might precede the cartoon controversy, but the poster doesn’t necessarily. Though if it does, it’s at least an understandable mistake.

But I doubt it is. It would take weeks if not days to make a new poster, but they choose this? Sam is likely right and I will send that email. The UN is scapegoating a whole nation for Muslims’ tendency to overreact to perceived slights by a few individuals. They’ll legitimize their feelings of aggrievement, and set a precedent that free speech in our countries goes so far as it doesn’t offend Islamic sensibilities.

    Dhimmitude first. What’s next- jizya?

  41. K from Oslo Says:

    Hi alex,
true, it wont take long to make the posters, but the prosess of preparing any campaign usually takes ages, so it could very well be a stupid mistake. I agree with you that Denmark is being made a scapegoat though, the branding of the DK as a xenophobic nation, with the cartoons as an extension of this, is just cheap.

I know that..I was just trying to answer your question as to why the US did not veto this poster–I would doubt the poster rises to the level of a security council issue…

Perhaps you were making a joke I did not get?

  44. elengil Says:

My original post had that question in it, whether we had the power to veto it or no. (not the poster, the statements against Denmark) If we did, we should have. If we didn’t then I guess it’s not an issue.

Either way, I still hate the UN and think we should kick it out of New York and stop funding 70% of it.

  45. K from Oslo Says:

Don’t worry elengi, you’re only supposed to fund 22% of it, and you owe them $ 1.246 billion ;)

  46. elengil Says:

and you owe them $ 1.246 billion

Great, we can just divert the 2 billion we give to Egypt. Or wait, have we stopped funding Hamas yet? We can take that instead.

  47. elengil Says:

BTW Sandy, LOVE the tribute to Hamlet …which, of course, took place in Denmark.

  48. K from Oslo Says:

Maybe you can get a discount? I defenitely think Denmark should get a rebate after this:)

  49. husamx Says:

As I’m one of the few Arabs participating in the comments on this post, and for the sake of giving another prospective to the argument as you semi-totally agree on the conclusion that UN is useless, and judge for the benefit of Islamic countries most of the times. Trying to stand on a middle ground, trying to realize what western countries think about UN and what Islamic countries think about UN, and giving you an idea about the thoughts of Islamic societies. Well i dont know if you will be surprise or wont be, to know that your thought about UN is a mirror image of Islamic societies thoughts about UN sure in the opposite direction, that UN always against Muslims and useless. So it’s Just one of the rare points both parties agree on. Impressive! Well my opinion UN is nothing more than a unity of worlds countries. you can’t just blame it as if it’s a stand alone unit, you can blame your countries. You can’t blame your car if it’s not working well, you fix it. you can’t blame UN if voting in it didnt go as you want! or it will lose the basic principle which it’s based on.

On my previous comment. I just knew today Lego is of Danish Origin, so yes maybe it’s representing Denmark not as i thought, though i still tend to believe the Lego part is the one that got discriminated and the poster stands for it’s right, but sure based on the latest cartoons problem, a poster like this could create lots of conflict about the message it hold. and as i wont stand for a racist act against Denmark, i’m offically against this poster.

  50. soylentgreen48 Says:

34/C D…”what do you get when you have an organisation full of dictators, tyrants and thugs ?”. Errrrr, the Arab League ? The Muslim Brotherhood ? Dunno but I do know what they have in common.

  51. Sean Shalor Says:

    husamx
That you can change your mind is evidence of rare intelligence.
I had thought you are a man, but now suspect that you are a woman. As you probably know, we men are afflicted with large amounts of testosterone which rather stifles the reasoning process and also slows us down in the mornings … which is why I am giving out with this warm-hearted drivel instaead of banging on about male domination fantasies and Islam. I’ll be back to normal by lunch time.

  52. She Says:

And the UN wonders why people don’t take them seriously…

  53. Erik Says:

husamx said “and as i wont stand for a racist act against Denmark”

As a Dane I thank you for the above statement Husamx. :-)

  54. Jake Says:

It’s important the UN remains as is. It’s a constant reminder to the right minded people of the world that a good proportion of the world is run by scum bags. If ever there was a point of focus for those who abhor the tragically wide range of inequities in the world, it’s the UN.

  55. Steven Says:

“The UN has beena dabcale for decades. But it has done a lot of good over the years and should not be abandoned. Instead, it need to be reofromed top to bottom. And this may happen in the not too distant future.”

    Achem. The UNRWA.

There is some good, however attempting to keep people in refugee camps and support terrorist groups is not good atall. IMO the bad outweighs the good. The UN should be scrapped and a new organisation can spring from its ashes.

  56. ArmyArtilleryWife Says:

    husamx–

If your car will cost half (or more) of its value to fix, with the potential for additional costly repairs in the near future, you don’t fix it, you scrap it.

Since the UN is a man-made institution and has nothing to do with faith, I feel comfortable at least discussing the possibility of scrapping it.

While I am sure there are people who are just upset about a few votes here or a few votes there, there are others who are much more concerned about the fundamental structure of the UN.

Frankly, the UN could vote that Israel and the US should be wiped from the face of the earth. As far as I am concerned, that has about as much moral and practical weight as a kindergarten class voting that their teacher is a stinky doo-doo head.

The question to me is whether or not the UN has enough value–in practice or in its design–that it is worth the reform.

I have not made up my mind yet…but I haven’t seen anything that encourages me recently.

Keep in mind that as a US citizen, I and my fellow taxpayers would be footing most of this repair bill.

  57. elengil Says:

Just think, the US could probably bring itself to a 0 deficit in 5 years flat if it stopped funding the UN & stopped giving billions in aid to the middle east, who promptly hate us for it anyway.

  58. Scott Says:

Back to Einherjar’s comment, I do indeed believe in leaving the U.N. international diplomacy and negotiations can be done without the U.N. leaving the U.N. should not be confused with supporting isolationism, its merely the first step in finding a new way to deal with other nations, the United Nations is not necessary in fighting global battles, it is not a source of ‘legitimacy’, and it is time that that trojan horse & megaphone be silenced. Abandoning the U.N. will signal that we are ready to move into a post-WW2 world.

  59. husamx Says:

lol, Sean Shalor Let’s just say I’m a good listener to my sense of reason, and who hasn’t got the ability to change his/her mind, is just wasting time in arguments …. Welcome Eric :)

ArmyArtillaeryWife: Frankly I’m as you don’t know if this UN would worth reforming or not, but I’m sure not in favor of getting red of it without creating another substitute of global association, it will be as rolling the development wheel backward rather than forward. Yes it’s sure a failure case now, even yesterday they admitted they failed to control the situation in Darfur, and the oil-food-scandal, some person got almost $20 billions from it!! But my opinion when there is a problem, there is always a solution, it’s just about us if we are smart enough to find the solution or not.

  60. Scott Says:

All leaving the U.N. would mean is that we would have to bring more support behind the foreign services of our State Department. With the invention of the Internet, the U.N. is simply not needed anymore. Its not the U.N. that we need to reform, the U.N. needs to be abandoned completely. Its our State Department that needs reform in promoting & spreading U.S. interests and learning how to deal in a post-U.N. world.

  61. ArmyArtilleryWife Says:

“Abandoning the U.N. will signal that we are ready to move into a post-WW2 world. ”

    Well put.

The UN was designed for a multilateral world…not the bi-polar Cold War or the sole superpower (yeah, I know…blah, blah, China, blah, blah, EU) world we have today.

In the first case, the UN becomes the football in the clash. In the second case, the UN becomes a pick-on-the-tallest-kid-in-class hater club.

  62. playa hata Says:

God Damn those racist-ass jigsaw puzzle makers! Don’t you stupid idiots realize that an ad agency created this? Most likely an American ad agency! And the Office of the HIgh Commissioner for Human Rights probably just signed off on it! Thank God I’m not like you. Do you have your head up your ass so far that you think “everybody knows Legos come from Denmark” just because you know it? Ask the average American. Poll the delegates of the UN. Then spew your ridiculous diatribes, you ignorant pieces of shit.

If you’re offended by the coarse language, I’m sorry, but somebody needs to get your attention and point out how ridiculous you all sound.
