Israeli elections round-up

Olmert won, and Bibi got spanked and Lieberman is- worryingly- a surprise winner. Isreallycool has an excellent round-up, and I do agree with Allison that the dumbest non-voters have to be the arab israelis. I mean, they had one seat less than the Likud for crying out loud, they could’ve been more influential than Bibi. Dumbasses. I hope Lieberman doesn’t get to be in the government though, cause his “kick the arab-israelis out of Israel” plan is psychotic. The pensioneers are a cool alternative.

On the other hand, the palestinians are indifferent to the whole thing, and have voted in their Hamas government finally.

Well, my knowledge of Israeli electoral politics is very out of date but I don’t think that Lieberman will be included in the gov’t.

And although I don’t like him, and wish that his party had not done so well, I wouldn’t overstate its importance. He inherited the remains of the hardcore non-religious right, which used to vote Likud. There’s nothing new in this element, and the fact that they divided their votes between Betenu and Likud is a good thing, because they destroyed their electoral power in the process.

I don’t think Lieberman will be invited to the coalition. Olmert is sticking by his new retreat plan, and said he will not invite anyone who will oppose it. as Lieberman surely would. Olmert can create a viable coalition with Labour, Meretz, the Pensioners (curse them) and the religious parties (and may God habe mercy on us all).

Why ‘curse them’? Because the dumbasses who voted for the pensioners didn’t bother to check what they actually think about anything not penison-related. Most of them - not me - would be stunned to find out Raffi Eitam is a fire-breathing right-winger, a former top Mossad operative and now a good friend of Fidel Castro.
