Jill Carroll Freed

Consider this the awesome news of the day:

American reporter Jill Carroll was set free Thursday, nearly three months after she was kidnapped in a bloody ambush that killed her translator, police said. Her editor said she was “fine.”

Police Lt. Col. Falah al-Mohammedawi said Carroll, 28, was handed over to the Iraqi Islamic Party office in Amiriya, western Baghdad, by an unknown group. She was later turned over to the Americans and was believed to be in the heavily fortified Green Zone, he said.

“She was released this morning, she’s talked to her father and she’s fine,” said David Cook, Washington bureau chief of The Christian Science Monitor.

YAY! :)

Natasha has it all coverd as usual!

Update: Hmmm. Jill says her abductors have treated her well:

“I was treated well, but I don’t know why I was kidnapped,” Carroll said in a brief interview on Baghdad television.

Even though the group threatened twice in videotapes to kill her, Carroll said, “They never hit me. They never said they would hit me.”

During the interview, Carroll wore a light green Islamic headscarf and a gray Arabic robe.

“I’m just happy to be free. I want to be with my family,” she was heard to say under the Arabic voiceover.

So far so good, but I swear to god if she starts talking about how she thinks the people who kidnapped her were victims or they did it because they need schools or similar stockholm related syndrome crap, she is so on my shit-list it’s not even funny.

Update: Ok, here is a question I would like answerd: Why is she still wearing a Hijab?

Nice to get a bit of good news for once, amid all the horrors.

Unfortunately her interpreter was killed, another innocent victim of the fanatics.

  2. jonas Says:

Any condemnation from her against the terrorists? Guess not, huh? It’s okay as long as she’s not hurt. It’s okay if her interpreter’s wife was widowed. She’s basically praising her kidnappers. Fool.

  3. K from Oslo Says:

Come on Jonas, she’s just been released from being stuck in a room for three months, not knowing what was going to happen to her. I can’t even begin to imagin what that must have felt like. Give her a break. I’m just happy that she’s free

  4. jonas Says:

Problem is, we’ve seen this kind of scenario before, so this is not an isolated incident. The kidnap victims are released through ransom or a rescue operation, and they in turn compliment on how well they were treated while in captivity. I’ve seen video clips of her post release interview this morning in which she said she was not hurt, and never threatened with physical harm. She looks well fed, and has nothing but good words for her captors (from the clips I’ve seen this morning). She says they fed her with very good food, gave her a nice room with nice furniture (a big WTF here), they were very good to her, etc. She doesn’t look traumatized in any way, and now she is serving as a terrorist mouthpiece. I have not heard one negative word about her captors from these video clips.

  5. K from Oslo Says:

As I said Jonas, give her a break. There is no need to start slamming her the same day she has been released. Presumably, the interviewer has asked her how she was treated, and she has answered that they didn’t hurt her. She wasn’t rescued, she was released into the hands of an islamic party, so it would be a bit difficult to praise a rescue effort. As for the “Stockholm Syndrome” this is an actal psycological phenomena just like post traumatic stress syndrome. All I’m saying is give the girl a brake. Let her get home to her family and have a chance to prosess what she’s been through before you start judging her.

  8. gringoman Says:

Early in her captivity I seem to recall video showing her as terrified and pleading for assistance. Now, today, she says they never threatened her with harm. What’s going on here? Is the problem my recall—or something more politically incorrect?

  9. Kilgore Trout Says:

I’m guessing the Jihab is to avoid any and all controversy until she gets out og the coutry and feels safe, I could understand her wanting to tred very lightly until she gets out of the country. If she’s still wearing it a month from now I’ll be worried.

  10. stackdogg Says:

I wonder how much money overtime the Christian Science Monitor had to pay for her release…not to piss on the parade, but that is most likely what happened.

  11. K from Oslo Says:

She is wearing the hijab because the interwiew is on Bagdad Television, run by the islamic party she was handed over to.

  12. ViceGrip Says:

When ABC reported it this morning on Good Morning America, they also made sure to mention that they were reporting some good news from Iraq. “See! See!, we finally did it, we finally found some good news to report! Ok so now that we got that out of the way.”

You know I hear a lot about how us American just want to exploit everyone, and I can now see where this idea came from. When you think about how much money the media makes, and the fact that blood in the streets sells, you can start to see how the media has become one of the worst exploiters of human suffering.

  13. The Informer Says:

Why the hijab? Um, well, my guess is that since this is the party’s TV station, they put her in front of that camera the first second they could. No other news outlet has had access to her since. My bet is, she was delivered to them and then they interviewed her just as she arrived. In other words, she hadn’t had time to take the hijab off and likely after months and months of wearing it that’s the last fucking thing on her mind: “Oh I better remove this hijab else people the world over will worry I might have Stockholm Syndrome.” Give me a break. She’s been out what four hours and this crap is started. Mind yourself. Give her some space for God’s sake. Otherwise, stick a sock in. BTW if given a choice between death or becoming Muslim, how many would choose death?

  14. jonas Says:

BTW if given a choice between death or becoming Muslim, how many would choose death?

    I would. Period.

  15. doxRaven Says:

While she is still in Iraq, Jill’s statements should be taken with more than grain of salt, and that should not in the slightest be held against her.

However, I hope that when she is home and, in time, faces the media she makes a clear statement condeming the kidnapping and resulting death of her interpreter.

Great news for Jill and her family!

  16. Michelle Rene Says:

Frankly, I wondered about Jill when I saw her all dressed in a burqa on camera. Now she is praising the men who killed her?

If i was a member of her driver/translators family (notice he doesnt even have a name) I would be so happy to hear that the people killed her son to get her were so kind to her.

What kind of person is she?

  18. Melissa in NorCal Says:

She is wearing the hijab for safety most likely and I’m sure will remove it soon enough. She isn’t really out of danger until she is back on US soil. I’m glad she is okay. She stabbed at them just a little by claiming she didn’t know why she was kidnapped. The hostages freed last week were very quick to blame us for thier kidnapping. Give her some time.

  19. K from Oslo Says:

All she has said is that she wasn’t misstreated, she was kept in a furnished room and that nobody beat her, she is a reporter, reporting about her ordeal. I don’t relly think that counts as “praising the men who killed her translator”. Honestly people, chill!

  20. Mactek Says:

    Michelle,

The translators name was Alan. From all accounts, he was a pretty neat person. He used to own a very popular music store in Baghdad… known by many people. Unfortunately, constant war and bad electricity wasn’t good for his business. He found himself working with Jill. They were apparently friends.

Alan was always careful about where he and Jill went, but that last time, Jill was specifically targeted. There wasn’t anything that could be done.

Alan is survived by his wife and child.

  21. elengil Says:

    Thank you Mactek.

    :(

  22. Tommi atkins Says:

Ok. She wasnt toprtured or had her head removed by scimitar whilst her loving captors screamed “God is Greater”.

Shes alive. For that she is thankful. Thats natural. She probably feels that her captors are wonderful wonderful people. They fed her , they did not beat her. They let her go.

Are they not really great people!

Well …err ..nope. In actuality they forcibly took her into imprisonment and committed acts of human right abuses that stagger creduality that the captors were wonderful people.

Why if they were so great, did she not arrive in Iraq and wave a banner saying ” I want to be captured , ‘cos you bandit/terrorists are such wonderful people, i can significantly improve my standard of living whilst held in your loving care”

She’s just happy to be alive. Does that make the Criminals good?

  23. yochanan Says:

don’t expect her to crit. the jihad terrorists she is a leftist like the so called peace activists who can only bash America. How many peace activists are there in difur? none that says it all.

  24. Mavis Says:

“ViceGrip Says:… the media has become one of the worst exploiters of human suffering.”

    Ah…yup!

  25. Egypeter Says:

I think she may have Stockholm Syndrome’d herself.

  26. BOSNIA257 Says:

DUDE ALL of this stuff Is just a hoax. She converted, she met a couple of Folks in Iraq, they played lets tie the white girl up, they bought a camera, shot a couple of videos, sat back had tea and crackers, tried to see how many hostages could be set free and how much ransom they could secure, its the same thing with that German chick.

  27. Canadienne Errante Says:

Bosnia, that’s a rather cruel assumption! What about her family? What about the German woman’s family?

  28. Mike Says:

I think it’s still a bit early know what has happened. They probably wouldn’t kill her translator if it was a hoax.

Jonas said, “BTW, if given a choice between dying or becoming Muslim, how many of you would choose death.” I would. Period.

Wrong answer Jonas, the correct answer would be to kill every muslim you could. Fortunatly you probably won’t ever have to make that choice.

  29. Jeff Says:

I walked into the lunch room today, and I saw Natasha on CNN. Great news.

  30. jonas Says:

Wrong answer Jonas, the correct answer would be to kill every muslim you could. Fortunatly you probably won’t ever have to make that choice.

Believe it or not, Mike, i do not hate muslims even though there are so many nutters among them who want all of us dead. I don’t have the heart to take a human life unless the lives of my loved ones were threatened. Give them a good beating, yes; immobolize them, yes; but killing for religious reasons is strictly out of the question.

BTW, this jill carrol drama is starting to get very interesting.

  31. Chip Says:

BOSNIA257 is probably very close to the truth.

Carroll is filled with anti-American bile and hasn’t said one word about her translator’s murder. This “kidnapping” has made her career and advances her political agenda.

  32. Mike Says:

Jonas, I don’t hate Muslims either (not anymore then all the other religions), but if anyone offered me a choice between death and islam I would have no problem taking as many lives as I could. It isn’t about religious reasons at that point, it’s about a group of people who think that their religion applies to everyone else. I don’t think islam is compatable with the modern world any more then Tojo’s japan was. I suspect it will all end in a similar manner.

  33. Scott from Oregon Says:

Riverbend (of all people) had a good post about Jill’s murdered translator. Go find it yourself….

You got your wish. She is talking about how kind and merciful the Mujahideen are, as compared to the barbaric and evil American troops. If I had any hair left, I would definitely want to pull it out……………..

  37. Steven Says:

Answer: Because she is a useful idiot.

  38. Steven Says:

I would be more satisfied if she was killed.
    Listen to her pathetic interview:

Its as if she was just kidnapped and given a holiday.

  39. Mike Says:

  43. Tony T.W. Ng Says:

Jill Carroll as I said after 1 week, and then 1 month and now 2 months after her release, is a self created hoax. Is she even talking at all after all this time has passed? Why? Think about what country she is in now and that might offer some insight. So are we all going to let the stock market news to take our mind away from her non-sense / hoax?
