PROTEST

Demand Release of Jailed Egyptian Protesters!

What: Picket at the Egyptian Consulate!
Where: 500 N. Michigan Ave., Suite #1900
When: Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at 12:30pm

Activists in the U.S . will picket the Egyptian embassy and consulates
in Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago and San Francisco on Tuesday,
May 9 at 12:30PM (local times) demanding the immediate release of all
jailed pro-democracy protesters arrested from April 24–27, 2006, in
Cairo. Dozens of opponents of Egypt's authoritarian government were
assaulted and arrested after riot police attacked a demonstration in
support of reformist judges who are challenging election fraud.
Journalists covering the protests have been attacked and threatened by
police, and in a separate incident, the chief of the Al Jazeera TV
bureau has also been arrested.

The largest protests took place April 27 as two judges, Hesham
al-Bastawissi and Mahmoud Mekky, were due to be brought before a
disciplinary panel after they accused the government of fraud in
parliamentary elections late last year—and charged fellow judges with
complicity. President Hosni Mubarak's government put a massive number
of cops on the street in Cairo—estimated at 10,000 by the New York
Times, much larger than the force deployed in the Sinai after three
bombing attacks earlier in the week.

One of the judges' supporters, Mohammed Sayed Said, told Al Jazeera,
"This display of force is a return to the policies of oppression and
to a police state. But all this will not succeed in reimposing a
culture of fear. The people have already defeated it and they are
ready to pay with their blood for democratic change," At least 50
activists were jailed and are expected to be held for 15 days,
according to reports.

U.S. solidarity activists are joining others around the world to
demand the immediate release of Egyptian democracy protesters, and an
end to state repression of judges, activists and the media who have
exposed electoral fraud, state violence and corruption.

  1. Rancher Says:

American blogs are all over this, this shall not be permitted. Mubarak can kiss 5 billion in annual aid out the window if it does.

  2. American Muslim Says:

    The criminals are Egyptian citizens.
Their crimes were committed in Egypt.
    They violated Egyptian law.
They were arrested by Egyptian police.
They are imprisoned in Egyptian jails.

And the American humanitarians take time off from torturing Muslim men, raping Muslim women, and killing Muslim children in order to state that “this shall not be permitted”. Will you bring “shock and awe” to Egypt also, you arrogant criminals? Do you really believe that Muslims will stand idly by and not respond to your bloodthirsty threats?

Again: Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.

  3. tommy Says:

Again, please ignore anti-American Muslim. Please do not bother responding to his attacks.

  4. elengil Says:

Just exactly WHICH Egyptian law did they violate with their peaceful demonstration for Judiciary Indepedance?

Was it the peaceful part? Does Egyptian law only allow for violent demonstrations? It seems Islamic law does. Perhaps that’s why. If they had gone strapped with bombs and threatened bloodshed then maybe they’d have gotten their way.

Mind yourself there, AM, apparently YOU are American too.

AM, I usually wouldn’t reply to people like you, but honestly, could you just FUCK OFF?

  7. AngryLibyan"American" Says:

American Muslim you dont get how the game is played. This is America’s doing, she has put Mubarak in place, she has fought of the Muslim Brotherhood, and other Anti-Government organizations. America has given Egypt the Green Light to do whatever is nessecery to keep the Egyptian Masses in order.

“Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.” That is the stupidist thing I have ever heard, These people have commited no crime. Its the Government which has commited the Crime. America does not want democracy and Freedom of Speach, She wants countries to do her biding, If their was democracy in Egypt the Muslim Brotherhood would have been in power a looooooooooog time ago. Just as Hamas is in “POWER” in Palistine, if their was Democracy the Taliban would be in Power in Afganistan, if their was Democracy the FIS would be in Power in Algeria, do you catch my drift American Muslim. Look America is a Colonial Nation, It does not Nesserialy have to be on your land to occupy. Look at Kazakhstan they are not a Democracy but they do the Great Isreali Whores bidding, they hate Islamists, so Dickless Cheyney sings their praises. Now Russia she is a Anti-Islam as well, but she has Ambitions, she doesent want to be pushed around by the States, and she doesent belive in the Bibles Fairytales so the Jews cant control her, that makes her a “Enemy of Democracy”. Catch my drift…..

  8. AngryLibyan"American" Says:

Monkey, Dude surley you don’t want real Freedom of speach in Egypt…

  9. tommy Says:

    AngryLibyan,

Have you sent an email or made a phone call to the State Department or Egyptian embassy yet?

  10. AngryLibyan"American" Says:

    Hell No!!!!!!!!!
I Refuse to waste My time. I am chilling out today. I am listening to the new Liv Kristine album , I am working on some badass riffs on a new Dime Guitar I just bought, I have no time to worry about “Democracy” and “Freedom” on the otherside of the world.

  11. elengil Says:

So you’re all up in a tiff over what Israel does, and you’ll holler and protest about that, but you won’t holler and protest and be up in arms over what Egypt does, and this is somehow NOT hypacritical?

For the record, this means you only care how Israel treats muslims, you don’t actually give a damn about how Egypt or any other ‘muslim’ country treats *its* muslim citizens.

I daresay, if the US had arrested a muslim blogger for any reason at all, you’d be all over it about how the US is repressing freedom of speech and is attacking muslims, etc. etc.

  12. Max Says:

    Hey SM

looks like the “Mubarak getting the finger” was taken off the Alaa blog… get it back.

  13. Louise Says:

    Please ignore the thugs.

  14. AngryLibyan"American" Says:

Egypt is not a Muslim country, at least not in my book. As far as protesting Isreal, I am a firm beliver that violence solves everything. Its my annoying Political Activist Left Wing Humanitarian Palestinian girlfriend who drags me to them. i hate protests, they solve nothing. She draged Me out that Pro-riverswimers rally last monday, Shit man I was out their next to all these sweaty wetbacks, screaming in my Ear, Well I told her never again, I protest on the internet on my own terms. elengil do you speak german?

  15. elmagnoon Says:

How about something similar in Canada?

  16. elengil Says:

    elengil do you speak german?

    nein

  17. A Brit/Egyptian Says:

You obviously know nothing about Egyptian politics if you believe that the MB would of been in power a long time ago had they had the chance. People voted for the MB in Egypt not because they want an Islamic Calipate as the MB would like to see - rather the MB have been the only force capable of actually providing needed services to people locally - including clinics and schooling, as well as social welfare support such as benefits to widows. The government in Egypt has failed in plenty of areas to provide these basic needs and the other parties have been so oppressed thus unable to garner enough support to run such projects.

The result is a polarised system between the Islamist MB who will surely only prove to put Egypt into further decline or the NDP regime which is keen to only maintain its grip on power to feed its band of cronies.

If people knew what the MB really stood for, and what they really wanted I’m positive they wouldn’t receive the support they have.

Your argument AngryLibyan is like the stupid argument I hear from some other Muslims in general: they tell me to stop assuming that people in the ME actually want democracy - what a stupid argument. Of course people want democracy; only with democracy do you come any closer to being able to truly exercise your autonomy.

Just my 2pence (I’m British ya see).

  18. AngryLibyan"American" Says:

I wanna see a Calipate, with all the issues we Muslims are going threw we need Strong Leadership, and a Strong Bond which will unite all Muslim lands, a Strong Leadership which will conqure new ones. I PRAY FOR A Calipate. I CRAVE IT.

  19. elengil Says:

a Strong Leadership which will conqure new ones.

Oh. So the new Muslim Crusades are what’s instore here. I see.

So all that bullshit about you want the US out of your affairs, you don’t want puppet governments, all that.. that’s just the cover.

You want to actually conquor the world, not live in peace. You want to subjugate others to your will, not just be free of other’s control.

Not so long as I live will I be subjected to you. I will die first and I swear to G-d I will take you down with me.

  20. True Muslim Says:

Yes, Yes - a Caliphate! We must have a rightous Kalifa who will lead all Muslims in Jihad to smite the infidels.

Remember, brothers, more than 60% of the unclean infidel dogs are women and children. Easy pickings for the brave and noble Jihadi, n’est pas?

    Allahu akbar

  21. elengil Says:

We must have a rightous Kalifa

*phew* I was worried there for a minute, but if that’s a requirement then you guys will be so busy trying to find one you won’t have time to wage war :D

  22. The Sanity Inspector Says:

I hope the demo is well-attended and effective.

  23. Karen Says:

Angry L.A. If democracy brought the Muslim Brotherhood into power in Egypt or the Taliban into power in Afganistan that would be the end of democracy. One election, one time. Do you actually think Hamas will allow another election in “Palestine”? Once in power, crazed violent thugs do not ever again hold free and fair elections…And as for catching your drift, I don’t and I hope I never do (neo-nazi cough, cough).

  24. nice Jewish boy Says:

“American Muslim you dont get how the game is played. This is America’s doing, she has put Mubarak in place,” — right, the U.S. assassinated Sadat. Hellooooo, Lyndon Larouche, we’ve found one of your supporters. Would you please come get him?

  25. Louise Says:

And here is a Bahrainian humanitarian taking “time off from torturing Muslim men, raping Muslim women, and killing Muslim children” in order to make an eloquent statement about Mubarak.

  26. elengil Says:

I hope the demo is well-attended and effective.

    Me too!!

*is annoyed that none are happening close enough to be able to go.*

Alas, I don’t think there’s an Egyptian embassy or consulate or whatever anywhere near me. :(

Hmmmmmmmm…….mmmmmmmaybe, even if there isn’t, demonstrations can be done outside local courthouses, with media cordially invited to attend and make note of it.

Update on arrested Egyptian blogger, Alaa…

  28. kat-missouri Says:

Lord, don’t you all recognize a troll when you see one. Angry whatever and Anti-American Muslim are probably some ultra right winger who thinks all Muslims are a bunch of violent schmucks who all want a caliphate or is a lefty who wants to mock SM for his previous support of American assisted democracy and his (and many others) belief that Islamist nutcases talking about the Caliphate should be opposed. This fellow is mocking your belief that it is wanted by any number of Islamic nationals across the Muslim/Arab divide.

The only fortunate thing about his stupidity is that he too probably thinks such a caliphate should not exist, but goes farther to totally disregard Islamist rhetoric on the subject and believes that it could never happen.

Troll looking for response. Karen snagged it.

Now, everybody knows what to do with a troll. don’t feed it because it gets bigger and uglier, totally destroying the entire purpose for the post and the comments which is to organize against the arbitrary and unlawful detention of Alaa and the other Kifiyah advocates.

I am posting again today and will keep moving people in this direction. I am looking here in my city. I don’t think we have a consulate per se, but there is a free trade zone here so I am going to find out if there is an Egyptian representation here. I’ll keep my eye out for coverage of the protests around the country. I think, even if the first day doesn’t get much traction, we should not be detered and look for the weekend to get it going. Unless it is a work stoppage, most protests occur at the beginning or end of the week in order for people to organize time off.

I’ll stand by for additional info.

  29. ragtag_the_3rd Says:

Angry Lybian American and American Muslim,

Just quick questions: Why do you guys have to use “American” in your nicknames? Don’t you guys hate America so much and yearn for a Caliphate? What are you still doing in America then?

I personaly think you use “American” because in your sick little minds u think other (Western & Arab) readers would take you seriously. You think saying you’re “American” makes u somehow more enlightened than the rest of the Angry Lybians and Muslims and somehow gives you the right to spew juvenile garbage as opinions. Eventhough no one takes you seriously or pays any attention to what you have to say, you still don’t get it. You still come back saying the same rubbish over and over again, respond to every individual comment with an essay that time and again proves you have no idea what you’re talking about. Amazing, really.

  30. Craig Says:

“Egypt is not a Muslim country, at least not in my book.”

Which book is that, Angry Libyan? You aren’t even a muslim, in MY book, you’re an atheist… so, who are you to judge? Try reading the Quran for a change, dipshit. I seem to know more about what it says than you. If you spent half as much time reading the Quran as you do reading the Torah and the Bible maybe you’d be able to be a muslim, eh?

But you don’t actually believe in God, do you, the only reason you read the Torah and the Old Testament is to find ammunition to insult people who do.

Ragtag, they tag themselves American for the same reason that everyone else in the US who wants to insult and demean their own country does. They think it lends their bullshit opinions more credibilty. And no, they won’t leave the US. They should have nevber been let in, and families who give birth to such cretins should have never been let in. I sincerely hope that situation gets rectified. They can start by deporting Raed.

Fewer than a dozen at the D.C. demonstration today. But the embassy did allow a pair of protestors to come in and deliver a statement.
