A really good suggestion

Alb Sayed had a really good suggestion :

In addition to writing to the State Department via the form SM
linked to, it may be helpful to address letters specifically to David
Welch, Assistant Secertary and head of the State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.

I found that they have a specific email address set up for Egypt: nea-ela@state.gov

I agree with Alb. I know David Welch and met him before. He used to be Egypt's ambassador, so he knows how to deal with our government correctly. It may not hurt to send him an e-mail as well! And this is something that even the egyptian readers can do. They have been asking how to help, and here is how: E-mail this guy !

Hey, I happen to work for the S. Dept by contract and would like to help but need to be careful as you can imagine. Any suggestions?

I took the liberty of writing a short note to Mr. Welch. I think it gets the point across. It reads as follows:

    To:

    C. David Welch
Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs

    Mr. Secretary,

The current turmoil in Egypt has come to the attention of many Americans via the “blogosphere” regarding the arrest and detention of Alaa Abd El-Fatah and his fellow bloggers for the “crime” of dissenting and “peaceful” public protests. This behavior of a “so-called” ally in the GWOT should be considered completely unacceptable by all in the State Department and the government of Egypt should be warned that if they do not release Alaa and his compatriots immediately that economic sanctions will be levied.

We will never win the GWOT if we allow foreign governments, who depend so greatly on our tax dollars, to silence our greatest allies in our struggle against Islamic fundamentalism.

    Thank you,

OH…..I see. So it’s “Islamic fundamentalism” we’re fighting!
It’s good to know what you meant by GWOT and that is fighting those with different views. That’s right, this statement is just as criminal as the Egyptian government arrest of protesters. “Islamic fundamentalism” are not terrorists you idiot.

    State Dpt guy,

What kind of trouble would you get in simply emailing the Egyptian embassy with your opinion? Is there some sort of internal rule that will not allow you to do that? You can always set up a separate free email account on Yahoo or elsewhere if you don’t feel comfortable using whatever email address you are currently employing.

  8. tommy Says:

    AngryLibyan,

Go now - write your email to the Egyptian embassy please.
As sorry as you often are, if Qaddafi locked you up on a visit to Libya for saying something (stupid or otherwise), I would write an email, make a phone call, or send a fax on your behalf.
