Egypt bans 2 newspapers

Foriegn ones. The French Le Figaro and the German Frankfurter Allgemeine
Zeitung, because they published articles that the minister of information, Anas Al Fiqqi, has deemed insulting to Islam.

The Egyptian agency said: "The minister of information said
that he would not allow any publication that insults the
Islamic religion or calls for hatred or contempt of any
religion to be distributed inside Egypt."

All hail Islam's defender and keeper of the Faith Anas Al Fiqqi.

Since I’m German, I could read the article, and it’s a shame it got banned. Looks like science is not welcome in Egypt if it contradicts the governments worldview.

Wooo! Yay for Egypt: enclave of democracy and free speech in the Middle East!

  5. Terry Crane Says:

He is not going to ban newspapers that “call for hatred ro contempt” of Judaism, is he? The consequences may be dire - Egyptians may forget how to read.

    Sorry

  6. dick Says:

How exactly are they alleged to have insulted islam? Saying it was spread by the sword? I thought that this was a matter of pride among at least some islamic religious leaders (very notably: ayatollah khomeini).

  7. Hannah Says:

Well, I think that’s important lest the Egyptians fall under the mistaken impression that they’re living in a society with free speech. SM, is it me, or are they limiting more and more of what you can do? Better be careful, it seems like things are heading in the wrong direction for you. Be safe kiddo.

Really? And if he banned every Arab publication that calls for hatred or contempt of Judaism?

Is that an accurate translation of his statement, Sandmonkey?

I wanna see them ban Al Jazeera for reporting on those people who are bringing the repution of Islam into disrepute. You know, the ones who put the snuff films on the web, blow up weddings, fly airplanes into buildings, that kind of thing.

  13. BrooklynJon Says:

    Valerie,

Those things were all done by Jews pretending to be Muslims, silly! Stick to the party line!

“claimed that the Islamic religion was spread by the sword”

I do not see the insult. Or is the insult that muslims are embarrassed by the fact that they did this, and it was pointed out by a non-muslim?

Oh, the pain that infidels do not submit to the clearly superior muslims.
Oh, the pain that infidel countries tend to be populated by peoples who have better standards of living than muslims and enjoy themselves.

I have an idea - a great idea. Non-muslims (sorry, Infidels) should think up fifty-two things they could do which would piss off the muslim populations of the world and then perform one of them a week. Get the muslim populations in a perpetual state of seething hate. With the object of desensitising them. A very excitable bunch, if you ask me. They could do with ridicule.

The danish were christened with a sword pressed to their necks(and probably alot of other countries), which every little child are being taught in school, the slaughtering in the name of christ with the crusades is taught to every school child, maybe that is the way to overcome the violent tone in religion, to learn and laugh at that primitive mid-evil approach

Sorry but what are you talking about? When were any Danes Christened with a sword pressed against their necks? There has not been anyone teaching the Crusades except as something not to do for a long long time. At least 100 years in Western Europe - not that they should as, after all, the Muslim population preferred to be ruled by the Crusaders than by their own Muslim rulers. But we ought to laugh more at fanatics. It is the one thing they cannot tolerate.
