The following pictures are of an egyptian citizen, who alongside a friend of his, were taken into a police station in Al Arish and tortured for 4 houres, with no charges filed against them or anything. Hossam , who has been covering the egyptian police human rights abuses and torture of egyptian citizens for a while, has more information on this.

Torturing another human being is never, ever acceptable.

I don’t know, it looks like he was asking for it. He probally wanted to know why he was being arrested!? That pompous jerk!

  3. Smarty Says:

    Blame it on the Jews!!!

Blame it on the use of panties in Abu Gharib!!

Is there no soul? No heart? No compassion?

I doubt the arresting officers truly believe that many of these people are really guilty…so how can they do it?!!

While it certainly should be reminded to people, it’s hardly news. It has been the norm, it is the norm, and it will probably remain the norm for a while.

After seeing the Egyptian officers beat their soldiers just so that they can show off for their Israeli counterparts, there is no cruelty from the Egyptian system of government that will surprise me.

Egypeter - from my experience, these people just don’t care. Guilt - or lack thereof - is irrelevant.

I understand it’s just hard to believe

    I feel sorry, no words

I think anyone would expect to be tortured if captured by Arabs (or Egyptians), regardless of what uniform they are wearing, if any. I would count myself lucky to get away with no worse than that.

I agree it is barbarous and totally unacceptable in the 21st century. This in the end is what the “clash of civilisations” (better called a clash of centuries) is about. This is why the Abu Ghraib incident was so evil and treacherous.

    SM,
Thanks a lot for posting about this.
Torture has no nationality, and is practised by almost all countries, but unfortunately while the in the West you can press charges and prosecute those who perpetuate it, here in Egypt (and the rest of the Arab World) the police always gets away with it.
There are wide ideological gaps between those involved in the growing Egyptian blogosphere… however, issues like combating torture and enforcing standards of human rights is something that can unite us all.
Again, I thank you for posting about this, and I hope you and the rest of our fellow bloggers continue devoting more attention to cases like these in the future…

I don’t know, I think he’s lucky that that’s all he got. I’m not saying he should have gotten more, those cuts and marks are more than anyone should have gotten, but from what I hear it could have been a hell of a lot worse. Doesn’t anyone in Egypt voice a criticism of this?
