On October 10, 2006, an Islamic website posted a message alerting
Muslims to what it claims is a new insult to Islam. According to the
message, the cube-shaped building which is being constructed in New
York City, on Fifth Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets in midtown
Manhattan, is clearly meant to provoke Muslims.
Just why exactly is it an insult?
The fact that the building resembles the Ka'ba (see picture below), is
called "Apple Mecca," is intended to be open 24 hours a day like the
Ka'ba, and moreover, contains bars selling alcoholic beverages,
constitutes a blatant insult to Islam. The message urges Muslims to
spread this alert, in hope that "Muslims will be able to stop the
project."
An Apple store with a bar? That doesn't sound right.Oh, wait, it isn't!
Sadly, it's a bit late for that, since the store opened for business
back in May. We do have some good news, though. As far as we're aware
it's not called the "Apple Mecca", it does not serve alcoholic
beverages, and neither Jack Straw nor Salman Rushdie work behind the
counter.

In other news a fatwa has been placed on the Cookie Monster for playing with dice on the children’s show Sesame Street. Radical Muslims the world over are claiming that their sensibilities have been trampled to the ground due to the cube-like form of the offending dice. Chants of “Death to the Cookie Monster!” have rocked the Muslim world for days now and clerics everywhere are demanding an apology on behalf of the Western World and calling for a boycott of cookies and blue clothes.
In an attempt to appease the angry masses a Muslim character will be introduced to the show as of next episode. The veiled Lego block, named Osama, is the latest in a string of politically-correct characters brought on by the producers to teach children tolerance and acceptance.
The Cookie Monster expressed his sorrow at the angry reactions and ensuing violence and is preparing to embark on a tour of the Middle East to promote peaceful dialogue and hopefully strengthen ever-weakening intercultural relations.

I am living in almost a constant state of terrible anticipation of waking up one day to find that Europe has convulsed into a new vicious pogrom - but this time it is not jews but muslims being torn apart, burnt and slaughtered.
If people would only look at the history of Europe they would see just how blood-thirsty they can be. And yet muslims continually provoke this viscious creature on even the most trivial of matters.
The Western reaction to date has been to mainly to try and ignore the constant “outrage”, but politicians are more and more testing the waters of public opinion. I fear the rules of multiculturism are changing. UK politicians talking about “internment” should there be another terrorist attack on their soil. Austrian politicians talking of “deporting” immigrants. Belgium politicians talking on “repatriating” immigrants. And Australian politicians strongly saying that if you do not like the laws there then you should leave. Embrace the host culture or leave.
The day is soon upon us when it will be politically correct (as in, you had better think and talk this way if you want to be elected) that you need to have strong views on Islam.
I am all for intergration myself. If you are going to a host country then you are joining them - they are not joining you. I think it is harsh, though, when the rules start changing, and affecting all people that fall under the label ‘muslim’…or any label for that matter.

I cannot believe the Islamocentric dribble of the Muslims who posted comments on SFGate. Am I the only Muslim who is sick to death of other Muslims telling everyone that they need to read the Koran, need to understand Muslims, need to “educate themselves”. I’m not interested in being understood- I just want to be respected. And I don’t think that people need to read the Koran to understand Muslims at all. In fact, reading the Koran will not “enlighten” people, it will only confuse them more.
I get really really angry when I see this kind of stuff. Most of those who commented didn’t even bother to check out the real story- most just lashed into a tirade about how the West needs to understand Islam. It’s Ramadan… I need to calm down and stop reading stuff that’s only going to make me angry….

As a non muslim I’m just as sick of hearing those excat comments. I don’t need to read every detail of Muslims holy books to tell that killing people with bombs is wrong; burning embassies is wrong etc. etc.
What I do miss, however, is “significant” muslims standing up in the media saying exactly what you did. When you hear no condemnation by muslims and only see dancing in the streets, we have an image/real problem. What’s needed, is more statements like yours.

Thanks. I’m still angry (gotta calm down…gotta calm down). It just pisses me off when some Muslims think the answer to everything is for Westerners to read the Koran. They take the moral highground and claim that the issue is “ignorance” amongst the “unenlightened”. They are severely in denial, instead of focussing the attention on themselves and on the problems we have among Muslims, they focus it on everyone else.
Everytime you point the finger, three of your fingers point right back at you. Muslims who claim that the problem is a lack of understanding from the West would do well to remember this.

I am struggling to be polite but I suggest you go get a dictionary and look up the word “Narcissism” and even perhaps “Narcissistic personality disorder”. In case you missed the news, Muslims are actually killing people. They are blowing them up. They are beheading them on the internet. Well I agree with half of what you said, but respect is earnt, not demanded with threats. In more related news: I work at a coffee shop / restaurant, where they serve “Spaghetti alla Bolognese”, an Italian noodle delight. Well, now you know where a potential trouble source lies - yes, the word “alla” in the dish’s name. It means ” prepared in the manner / kind of” in Italian..like Spaghetti made in Blognese way, or something like that. Now, one day there was a hevy crowd, and lots of guests were ordering this dish, so much so that the cook got irritated, and said “Shit! Spaghetti alla my ass” (replacing the ‘Bolognese’ with ‘my ass’) - out of sheer frustration.

I agree mostly, but (channelling Lynne) the Muslim world doesn’t have exclusive rights to hate. There are non-Muslim haters out there. However, the Muslim world seems to be doing a lot of it. And a lot of the haters do seem to be justifying their hatred based on what they claim is in the Koran (having not read it myself, I don’t personally claim to be an authority on its contents).
I’m also a little leery of the whole “respect” thing. I think a lot of stupid stuff gets done because of perceived slights and disrespect. Back in the day, it wasn’t uncommon for gunshots to ring out in my fair city because someone didn’t look at someone else the right way when they passed on the street. If that’s not stupid, then I have to revamp my whole definition of stupid.
I have some more comments about immigrant communities and respect for the rule of law, but seeing as the word “Narcissism” has already been raised in this thread, I think I’ll stop now.

Tantor provides an entertaining rant and I am sure he/she enjoyed getting that of his chest, but the sentiments expressed in his letter and some of the other comments above give a hint how close the west might be to reaching the end of its tolerance of the non-stop aggression from militant Islam. If the West collectively decides that an attack on one Christian is an attack on all or makes alliance with other faiths under attack from Islam (such as Jews, Sikhs and Hindus) things will get very ugly, very quickly. There has been plenty real of provocation if you want to add it up - you don’t have to look too far and its all more tangible than a cube of glass. One more real outrage might do it, so my advice would be to keep a very low profile for a bit and hope its not too late.

Hey man I decided to post because it seems mostly crazy ()*%$# are the ones who are pissed enough in their beliefs to post. Yea Islam isnt in the best place right now, but a lot of this has to do with western control in the area. Who put Sadam in power? Who put osama in power? And to everyone else, what do me or the other millions of people in the United States who are classified as muslims based upon our nationality have to do with the views of some jackass trying to push his own agenda by creating this kind of controversy.

I hate reading such abuse made about my religion! I am so outraged! I live in the UK and i’ve never experienced such islamophobic comments…no wonder all the Muslims feel under attack by the Western World, im ony 15 and i cant believe so many people feel so strongly about Islam, and by the way, i dont know anyone who doesn’t condemn the bombings by the so-called Muslims. Everyone thinks that Islam is a violent and hateful religion when it isn’t - im not trying to preach my religion but i just want people to understand that there are sane people out there. I just wish that some of you people understand why Muslims in the West feel so threatened. Everything that a Muslim person does and when it is wrong, it is magnified to make it seem like it is bigger than it really is- so the Muslims do the same, it is only understandable…and yeah, Muslims are going through a tough time at the moment, and the media doest really help either, i just wish that you wouldnt attack my relgion, it’s just a form of discrimination and slander, i’m sure that it really is’nt a moral thing to do, even if you do think that it is ‘bad’ religion.

I don’t understand why everyone gets so upset about their religion being slated. If you look through history all the way back to the first humans, we have attacked, killed, raped, robbed and land grabbed, all in the name of religion. So when someone turns to you and slates your religion, just smile and say “Yeah, and yours” because the chances are, your religion is just a bad as theirs. I myself am a holy muslim and am disgusted with this because this looks like a ‘Kaba’ this therefore i think it should be demolished because this is an affect to the muslims society. why was this built in a shape of the Kaba? anyways.ASTAGFIRULA this means may god show u how bad you people are.

As a muslim, i don’t give a crap if you use our holy Koran to wipe your ass with it, it still won’t help you get all the crap out of it and nothing will since u seem up to your neck in it.
Secondly, i read all the threads posted here, some made sense others did not, but that is a very old debate and i am tired of repeating myself in many blogs and lame religious facebook groups,..etc.

Now that was interesting :
The answer is simple, i think, people get angry over religious insults only for one thing, they take it personally. Why ? Cause it has nothing to do with religion, it has to do with our basic primal instinct and the jungle law, who is better than whom.
Me adopting Islam, automatically means i believe in the ideas of Islam, and i believe that is the right path to go and to lead my life with, the only thing that will annoy me when you attack Islam, has nothing to do with Islam at all, sadly i will be angry because you attack the way i think is right, you’re attacking my intelligence and ego, and being the uneducated muslim who came from a third world country like myself, posting something to retaliate like “fuck you, i will go fuck your mother in her ass when she sleeps you pig” or whatever, would even make me look more lame, specially when i get to read all the fancy well written replies by all your well educated westerns out here, why i cannot come up with such fancy replies ? Because i am stupid, which proves you right and even attacks my intelligence even more, which leaves no more room for argument since i have proven my own stupidity, which makes me even more furious, which will only lead to violence on my part.
Now i am talking about the average ignorant Muslim who comes from a third world country with no to limited education.
As for well educated muslims like myself (which are few in numbers) due to our tyrant governments who keep us in poverty and ignorance, well, muslims like me are intelligent enough not to give a crap about what any of you think about Islam, whether good or bad, cause as a believer in Islam and in freedom at the same time, i also understand that everyone is entitled to his own religion, thoughts and believes, like this nice Jew said, i don’t even care if you respect me as a muslim or not, you do not owe me respect and i do not owe you respect either. I’d be happy if you just leave me alone, if you stop pushing your laws and suffocating those nice muslims living among you hurting no one, stop ruining their businesses and lives by your tyrants governments.
Now, as for the muslims who are like me, they do not interest anyone, and no money will come from there if the media showed them on TV. The media focuses on the ignorant groups, because Media is an evil business that thrives on hatred and contraversy.
Now as for why the 3rd world countries are ignorant and mislead by tyrant governments, as for why there is Saddam and Osama Ben Laden, as for why the US government killed its own people on 9/11 and blamed the muslim community, you all need to watch this :

It’s always amazing to me at how easily Muslims are led to believe in pretty much any conspiracy theory that makes their kind look better or more righteous in some way. How dumb can they be? Even Osama broadcast a claimed responsibility for 911 with obvious pride. It also never ceases to amaze at how easily Muslims express “so-called” righteous anger at perceived slights such as for example a cubistic building. What’s next I wonder? Why does Islam do this? Are Islamic people truly that moronic or are they trying to deceive. After all, the Koran itself teaches every Muslim that to deceive the Infidel is a holy thing. All of this weird evil thinking has to come from a source of some sort does it not? The obvious source is The Koran and the keepers of the faith (The Saudis), yet because perhaps of their oil we make like they are our allies and friends in the “war on terror”. What a joke! The Saudis if anything are the ones most directly responsible for spreading the theology of terror that most Muslims do not subscribe to. Unfortunately as their sick perverted propoganda are broadcast to the downtrodden masses much like the messages of hate form Hitler, Stalin, etc…, a larger percentage are converted to believers and hence the growing terror. One day soon though, the world will not depend on oil anymore and Muslims around the world may indeed be worshipping a pile of dust, especially if the Saudis keep it up. An when that day happens, perhaps cubsitic buildings will not spark protests of rage as they will once again only resemble themselves.
