2oll lezaman yerga3 ya zaman

The following is a beer ad in the very mainstream egyptian magazine "Akher Sa3ah" that ran in 1957 (Thanks Haitham). The 2 line captions between pictures reads as a poem:

The Silence of loved ones when they meet,

injures intimacy, thus kills love.

Let's call on the magic Fairy,

Stella, she with the shinning star.

Stella is what we need,

a messenger between our hearts.

Then the Disclaimer says:

"Stella beer is made of Egyptian Barley, which is nutritious for the body, and other well chosen ingredients. Fresh Stella Beer is the healthy, cooling and refreshing drink."

Oh, how far we've come since then.

Sigh…

nutritious for the body… well… some doctors in Egypt seem to think so.
A few weeks ago, the father of a friend of mine was in the hospital for surgery (he was having serious liver problems). After the surgery, the doctor was telling him that it would be good for him to drink beer. Beer… good for someone with serious liver problems, that had just undergone serious surgery???
    anyway..

I am just trying to think of the modern equivalent in Egypt - presumably for Mecca Cola, not Stella.

And Stella Artois is a helluva good beer.
    Cheers

  4. Holme Says:

Damn! It really has gone downhill for your guys the last 50 years :S

  5. Lynn Says:

I doubt that they still do this but in Scotland back when my mom was having babies there (50 years ago), they used to give a beer to women who had just delivered babies to help them recover quicker.

  6. sophia Says:

How many people in Egypt 50 years ago were literate?

But of course, anyone could see the photos….

    Yes, you’ve gone backwards.

  7. Howie Says:

Of course…all joking aside…it is about a loss of freedom.

Access to alcohol etc. has its own tradegy and maybe Mohamed was on to something but, of course, who wants Big Brother deciding on issues of booze, love, dress, etc.

  8. RocketRay Says:

    Beer: it’s what’s for dinner!

  9. Valerie Says:

If a nursing mother drinks a beer with supper, it helps the baby, too.

And arak makes you smarter and more eloquent.

  11. antares Says:

Two schools of thought in Islam: 1) only the product of the two trees is forbidden (fermented date juice and fermented grape juice; that is, wine and brandy) and 2) all alcohol is forbidden. Inebriation is forbidden under both.

Beer is okay under 1 but not 2.

In Germany the saying is “Dunkls bier ist fuer wurden der Mutter.” (Dark beer is for pregnant women.) But my German relatives don’t consider wine and beer to be alcoholic.

Beer for breakfast: the most important meal of the day

  13. antares Says:

To Chip: It’s the breakfast of champions!

  14. Modern Pharaoh Says:

Thats the last example that should be used to show how far Egypt has declined….Beer means nothing! So what were Retards cuz we don’t allow Beer ads….

We are Retards because of many other things my friends….the last thing i want to see is a DRUNK EGYPTIAN .. Egyptians are acting like idiots these days without being drunk, Imagine while drunk!

  15. Modern Pharaoh Says:

hey mr ASS MONKEY, do you ever, ever have anything Good To say! One positive thing!

  16. d00d Says:

    Praise Allah for progress!

The quacks are still recommending Guinness mate. In moderation, of course. It’s good for putting iron back into the body.

  20. Eva, Canada Says:

Beer is liquid bread, seriously! The same nutritional value plus more fun.

  21. russell Says:

Haroun, Where can I get one of those scanners? : )

  22. Faisal Says:

    Sob7an allah.

I was just about to post something about this ad and another one, even though I’ve had them for sometime now.
