This just proves how unwilling Mubarak is to instilling real democracy. He relies upon scam democracy, and wants the rest of the world to view Egypt as a democracy when it is not.

Katrin, you can find a link to the petition on the website. I hope you’ll sign.

Very polite and respectful letters to the Egyptian authorities — and to embassies abroad — may help. But please remember (especially for foreigners) to be polite. It’s about helping Abdelkareem regain his freedom, not about venting our anger.

    Esra’a,

thank you - it wasn’t there yesterday. Of course I signed.

    Tom,
But please remember (especially for foreigners) to be polite
That’s exactly why I don’t write a letter myself. As a foreigner you sometimes don’t realise if you’re polite or not. Especially when writing to authorities of an Arabian country.

Amnesty has a nice webpage on letter campaigns:

The petition on http://www.freekareem.org is fine, so just google up your local Egyptian embassy / consulate / chamber of commerce / tourist information office / whatever and send it off. Remember snail-mail is sometimes better as there is no delete button to make an unwanted letter go away.

He’s probably locked up with that Sheikh that converted to Chritianity…

Jeez, one can’t say a word against Islam in Egypt, lest you get thrown in jail!!

I hope everyone signs this petition. SM, you should put a link to it up top…

Someone should set up a benevolent fund for the guy so when he gets out of prison he has some ability to make choices or move to a part of the world where they are not afraid of people’s criticisms.
