As for Israel - they seem to be able to develop their deadly weapons on their own. At least we can be reasonably certain that they won’t turn those weapons on civilians. I’m saying reasonably - if you think that Israel intentionally targets civilians then there is no point in discussion.

I think Bush is an idiot. That said, I don’t agree with sactions. Any sanctions. Individuals should be free to trade with whomever they desire. They should also be willing to pay the consequences of such action (if say, they traffic coccaine in a country where coccaine is illegal) and not whine when the law comes-a-knockin. Another countrys social disfunctions is it’s peoples problem, not mine. We handle our social disfunctions through elected representation.
America is pretty proficient at nation-building. Germany, Italy, Japan, Vietnam (took the North two tries to actually take the south and thet with the help of China), Afghanistan (contrary to popular media Afghanistan has come a long way - it was never a vary centralized state to begin with) and Iraq (again contrary to popular media. Iraq more resembles Germany after WWII than a quagmire. The main difference being that the Iraqi’s have no national image - they have only started seeing themselves as Iraqi and not Arab, or Sunni or Kurd or Shia).
The problem is no one likes it when we intervene and whine when we don’t. It’s a catch-22 and most Americans are tired of being pissed on for doing something and pissed on for doing nothing. I pretty much want to say f*ck you all. Stop giving money to countries. Stop ‘meddling’ in their affairs. Stop trying to help.
But that doesn’t really solve anything does it? We learned that on Dec 7, 1941.

Sadly perhaps the truth is the reverse of that. Won’t be long before they are two or three separate entities - their own assembly has already indicated that and they never were “one” state anyway. Like I said - the civilians must be the actual target of the attack - not innocent bystanders that ‘militiamen’ don’t see fit to clear away before launching a quassam. 18 dead women and children is tragic. It’s also tragic that it’s only Pal women and children that count. When Israeli women and children die there is not international clamor. Any civilian death is tragic - the fact that you only cite one sides casualties shows your prejudice. Intent is the difference between murder and self-defence. I didn’t watch the video and I take your word for it. Something tells me that similar stuff is happening in all countries where power acts in obscurity. One only has to watch the movie Midnight Train to get the picture. A good amount of sadists are attracted to police work and lack of accountability enables them to realize their propensity for violence. There’s no reason to believe that this post is an attack on Islam. It’s aimed squarely at a regime that’s equally despised by Islamists. Hizb ut-Tahrir have highlighted the use of torture by the Islam Karimov regime in Uzbekistan, does this mean Hizb ut-Tahrir are part of a Crusader-Zionist plot? And as Twosret pointed out in the very first comment, regime change in Egypt is not noticeably high on the US neocon agenda.

I believe you may have the same doubt I have about this video. Although I have no doubt that such acts really do take place, this video seems suspicious to me. It’s the way the camera is turned to the man’s face. There is a strong suggestion of what is happening off camera but you can’t actually see if it is really taking place. If you wanted to fake it, then surely this is exactly how you would do it?

Stephen - the thought crossed my mind. But why bother staging something like this? And did you see the cane marks on the man’s buttocks - if these were fake, it was high-quality work, done by a very professional make-up artist. I doubt that this is the case.
