   Well it won’t go anywhere, but how is that stupid? I think it is an excellent idea. Of course America will need to make some major social and cultural changes - to stop rich upper middle class kids whining and seeking deferments. How about no college for anyone who does not successfully complete their term?

   Liberals will keep the college deferral, because of course, they are too good for the military. And they want to add various bleeding heart social programs as an option to get “drafted” into.

   The fact is, the US volunteer military is better educated than the population at large for its age group. The draft would bring in dumb shits, liberal cowards, and felons. It is an attempt to weaken US will, not to strengthen us.

   I believe we are seeing the Democrats self imposed destruction. All these years they’ve wailed about how the GOP has screwed things up and now they finally get to show everybody that they have worse ideas or none at all. Let’s sit back and enjoy the comedy.    Here’s the reasoning as I understand it. Rich white guys who have never spent a moment serving the country in uniform decide to wage a war on the flimsiest of excuses. The guys in the all-volunteer armed forces are largely poor and disproportionally minority. So the rich white guys don’t care about them.

   Now if there’s a draft, the people in the Army won’t just be from Detroit, Harlem, south Chicago etc. They’ll be from Scottsdale, and Bel Air, and Kennebunkport: the sons & daughters of the rich white guys. Maybe then they’ll think twice about starting a war their children will be fighting.

   Rangel introduced a similar bill in the last Congress and then voted against his own bill! ( Read he voted for it before he voted against it).This is a cynical attempt on his part to embarass the Bush administration. Of course he knows the bill will go nowhere and might vote against it again.

   I don’t follow US politics as closely as you do SM, but according to the article you linked to, this appears to have been this guy’s pet project for ages. He also appears to be getting some support from the Republican Senator quoted though not for the same reasons. So how does this become “The democrats want the draft back”? It seems like you aren’t so much following a pro-American as a pro-Republican agenda these days. There’s nothing wrong with that of course, but it - and especially bearing in mind who hosts your blog - is undermining your credibility as an independent Muslim voice in the Middle East.

   RocketRay - that’s just BS. The US military are more or less exactly representative of the population in terms of income, ethnicity and education. Read the statistics.

   Nobody in USA is starting a war “at the flimsiest of excuses”.

   No, the dems don’t want the draft back, neither does Rangel. What he’s doing is getting the attention of the artards over here and making them whine like the little sissy-men they truly are. Working out really well too…the whines and moans are deafening.

   Oh, and yes, the US military are indeed better educated as a group than the population at large….a huge percentage of them enlisted at least partially so they could afford that education.

   Mr. Smarty might be shocked at just how many “liberal democrats” are actually serving in the military, I know of two for sure because I gave birth to both of them. The Rightie rants about social liberals being cowardly dumbshits are getting pretty lame. Get a clue.

   Rangel wants to institute the draft because there aren’t enough poor minorities joining the service to bitch about the war. He can’t exploit them if they don’t join, so he’s going to force them, while pretending it’s the white boys he wants.

    This isn’t about drafting people into military service. They are trying to create a national service program where everyone spends a year learning how to “prepare for a disaster” etc… Total f’n joke. If it goes through it is going to be impossible to get a spot in the military.

    Well, the interview I saw on TV with some chap who was drafting the idea, or representing it, was…if there is a draft then other policy makers will have their own children in the military and if there is a war then those children will be put in harms way. Therefore there will be less war because policy makers will not want their children shot at.

    The thing is, and I do not understand US law that well, the President can commit troops for police actions without the permission of Congress. And has done so. Many times, I think.

    Also, the military is the last line of diplomacy. You must be willing to use your military to back up your interests and you must make your enemies and allies believe that too. If you do not then you will be taken advantage of - to the point where you will be continually provoked. And then, when you are forced to act, it is a situation much worse than if you had nipped it in the bud.

    The draft may be a good idea to get some discipline into some kids that would not otherwise see it, but it will not stop wars.

    How was he racist? Wasn’t he talking about the upper classes not sending their kids to war? By not arguing his views, aren’t you becoming what you’ve accused him of being, a person who “will not listen to anything contradicting his own… views?” What do you think about the issue?

    All of the above is racist drivel, on a nice KKK level. Only it’s against Caucassians, so it’s OK, innit? After all, members of the Caucasian race (AKA White Man) are evil, we all know it.

    Some things are just not worth arguing. The same way I will not argue about blacks with a Klan member or about Jews with a Nazi, I will not argue with RR about Caucasians.

    Personally, I find it fairly obvious that the draft proposition is a publicity stunt and nothing else. The stastics are speaking for themselves - recruitment numbers are standard, and the educational demands on soldiers have not been lowered.

    Oh… and no, RR wasn’t talking about the “upper classes”. He was talking about “rich WHITE men”. There is no use trying to camouflage blatant racism in some sort of class strugle.

    Again - find the stats. They are freely availiable, and the military populace make-up closely approximates the general populace - by race, family income and education.

    Here is how the draft order should go : all the children and grand-children
    between 19-29 years old of.

    1. president, vice-president, cabinet
    2. both houses of congress
    3. federal judges
    then
    4. then by income. from highest to lowest.those between 19-29.
    or their children or grand-children.
    5. no deferments for college
    6. no deferments except for serious medical or physical conditions.
    7. combat units are filled by catagories. 1 is first, then 2, then 3, then 4, then the support units.

    Why the judges? What’d they do?

    And why rich people before poor people? Is it some kind of sin to be rich? Is it wrong to work overtime? Or to take risks that pay off? Of to study hard and get advanced degrees? Or, for that matter, to get lucky and hit the lottery? I busted my butt and did my post-Doctorate work at Harvard. Should I be required to go on some suicide mission for my hubris?

    I say the first group of draftees should be people who make logically unsupportable comments on weblogs. Then the Marxists and Communists, if there are any left.

    BJ #22..stop it. The Kwik-e-Mart is a vital piece of infrastructure and all potential draftees are exempt.
