The Phalange flag and a fire. It speaks for itself!

This is fucked. Aren’t people in the Middle East tired of this kind of shit?

  2. Ha Ana Za Says:

It’s heart breaking- until Hariri’s death Lebanon was well on the way to becoming the cosmoplitan capital of the ME. Now it seems they’re heading back to 1975. My heart is with the Lebanese people

  3. The Raccoon Says:

    Holy shit…

I just hope this won’t plunge Lebanon into another civil war.

Good luck to all the sane Lebanese…

  4. N10452 Says:

    Funeral of Sheikh Pierre

  5. Puniqe Says:

This kind of thing is unseemly. I mean, my blood is boiling over these murders that keep happening, and yes, Sunnis attacked a lot of poor Syrian workers after Hariri’s murder plus the Shia went on a rampage through Christian areas because a tv show mildly mocked Nasrallah. But that’s still no excuse.

As someone of Lebanese Christian descent, I feel ashamed.

  6. Vox Says:

It is important to understand that the Lebanese government is constitutionally dismissed when 1/3 or more of the ministers quit (or are killed). Hezbollah, Lahoud and Amal had this one third minority in the government, unfortunately for them, two of their ministers have defected to the bright side of the force. So now that Gemayel is dead, all they need to do is to get another minister and the government is kaputt.

  7. Howie Says:

    Vox-

You know just what you are talking about. I understand they just tried to kill another one of the cabinet memebers by shooting into his house. If they kill another guy…Lebanon will probably catch on fire…

That would leave an opening for Syria to return and/or Hizboallah to attempt some kind of coup which would certainly lead to civil war.

They are one spark away from dragging Israel into this…though I doubt HA would want to create a defacto alliance between Israel and the Sunnis, Christians and/or Druse.

Likely this is an attempt to blow away the Hariri investigation and maybe the beginning of that coup?

  8. Dan Irving Says:

“They are one spark away from dragging Israel into this’

Don’t see how the March 14 forces could do this what with UNIFIL providing covering fire for Hizb … I mean acting as a blocking forc … er … I mean observing in South Leb.

  9. Steven Says:

I hope Israel is ready and willing to step up to the plate in Lebanon and really deal with Hizballah.

  10. Puniqe Says:

“I hope Israel is ready and willing to step up to the plate in Lebanon and really deal with Hizballah.”

Oh, please no. Israel needs to stay the hell out of this right now.

  11. tommy Says:

If I were Israel, I would go to the heart of the problem. Get their forces ready….

    ….wait….

….wait until Syrian troops come in to provide back for Hezbollah….

….and then launch an all-out-offensive on Syria.

  12. Olive Picker Says:

Can’t the Christians show their support for Lebanese goverment without harrassing fellow Lebanese of Syrian descent who had nothing to do with the shooters?

  13. tommy Says:

Vox has it correct. This is an attempt to bring down the government by Hezbollah/Syria/Iran. Nothing more.

  14. tommy Says:

I wouldn’t worry about the Lebanese Christians in the event of a Hezbollah takeover. Senator Murtha has a plan to redeploy them to Okinawa.

  15. BrooklynJon Says:

    Tommy,

#11 is Israel’s correct course of action. If only they had a PM with balls. Or even ovaries. I think Olmert’s gonads are just the dried-up remains of citrons from past Sukkots. Or maybe they’re small paperweights purchased from the UN gift shop. In any event, they’re not secreting any useful hormones, so look for Israel to meekly watch a bad situation get worse.

  16. Anonymused Says:

“I wouldn’t worry about the Lebanese Christians in the event of a Hezbollah takeover. Senator Murtha has a plan to redeploy them to Okinawa.”

    LOL! Hilarious tommy.

Per usua,l the Christians of the ME are taking it in the ass…again. This will continue to happen until 50-150 years from now Christians will no longer be present in the birth palce of Christianity. Sounds grim or absurd? Just watch and remember that I told you so.

  17. Egypeter Says:

#16 - It’s really no secret if you look at recent statistical trends…

I believe Lebanon used to claim a majority Christian only a few decades ago. And now they’re hovering around 25% or so. The prospects of a ME Christian these days are hovering around nil. Under these current governments it’s lousy being a muslim, now imagine what’s it’s like NOT being a muslim.

And Lebanon is one of the ‘good’ countries…

Look you guys, it’s not about the muslims or the christians, you guys need to get a grip these leaders are just plain out run of the mill crooks.

  19. Free Thoughts Says:

[...] As the UN-led ‘peacekeepers’ are busy searching Israeli aircrafts to gun down, Syria and Hizballah (with the help of the Islamic regime in Iran) kill another anti-Syrian occupation Lebanese official. Lebanese Cabinet minister, Pierre Gemayel, is killed. We are gonna see another civil war, started by the forces of terror in Lebanon, while the blue helmets, once again, will be staying idle. May I already affirm the failure of the UN ‘mission’ ? Just this early morning, the Opinion Journal published the following op-ed by Michael Young, Don’t let Syria get away with killing Rafik Hariri . Sandmonkey has the first photos of the reactions of the Lebanese to this crime. [...]

  20. lynne Says:

I sincerely hope that Israel will stay out of this situation. If the Lebanese people need help, I hope that they will ask the US, a country that is in a better position to provide support. I just hope that people calm down and stay out of danger. I am sure that their fallen leader would not want them to die, but to live on to try to complete the work that he believed in. My heart goes out to the good Lebanese people. This is a tragedy.

  21. Anon Says:

Look you guys, it’s not about the muslims or the christians, you guys need to get a grip these leaders are just plain out run of the mill crooks.

When a christian majority is reduced to a small minority, that’s not the works of crooked leaders. It’s the systematic genocide of christians. Even regular christians get dragged away and murdered by muslims. We hear this so many times. You are not being honest with yourself.

  22. Econ_Scott Says:

    Anon:

Christians murdered. And only one more cabinet official that is opposing a Hezbollah takeover of the govt. needs to be eliminated to destroy the 2/3 majority needed to block them.

Hezbollahs Nasrallah said there would be “Scores Settled” after the Hezbollah/Israel war.

    This is only the beginning.

If I were Christian Lebanese I’d be stocking up on weapons and ammunition.

  23. antares Says:

Vox @ 6 is right. This assassination was all about bringing down the gov’t. But if the gov’t falls because its ministers have been shot and killed, forget the constitution. There will be civil war . . . again. And what was once the brightest spot in the region will go to hell once more.

Olive Picker @ 12: “Can’t the Christians show their support for Lebanese goverment without harrassing fellow Lebanese of Syrian descent who had nothing to do with the shooters? ”
A maxim from Northern Ireland in the days of the riots: Never throw shit at an armed man. Never stand next to someone who is throwing shit at an armed man.
If the Lebanese of Syrian descent want to live in peace with the rest of the Lebanese, they need to deliver the heads of the assassins before Friday. I wish it were not so, but I think that’s a realistic assessment. If the Syrian-Lebanese won’t police their own, you can bet someone will do it for them with much less concern for guilt and innocence.

  24. tommy Says:

    Anon,

It isn’t “systematic genocide,” (let us not debase the use of the term genocide any further than it has been by Palestinian supporters) though no doubt many Christians in Lebanon have felt uncomfortable in a increasingly Muslim country and have packed up and left. (Lebanese-Americans are mostly Christians, for example.) The real reason for the shift is that the Christians (and probably Sunnis also) are losing the demographic game to Shiites. They are simply being outbred by these rather ignorant and, from a cultural standpoint, almost useless Shiites who contribute very likely to greater civilization but, in fact, retard civilization altogether.

Lebanon will go down as yet another experiment in multiculturalism gone terribly wrong. Hasta la vista, Lebanon!

  25. tommy Says:

outbred by these rather ignorant and, from a cultural standpoint, almost useless Shiites who contribute very likely to greater civilization

I meant “little” not “likely,” of course. Sloppy sentence editing. Proofread, damn it!

  26. tommy Says:

I found a nice little Arabic term that sums up Nasrallah nicely:

    abû gu`rân.

  27. The Usual Suspect Says:

I don’t know much about Lebanese politics, but those pictures made me cry. That is all.

  28. Louise Says:

Well, well, well. WWIII here we come. It’s getting closer with each passing day.

  29. mike Says:

How is this the begining of world war three? Isn’t lebanon always like this?

  30. shlemazl Says:

Democratic victory in the elections has made Syria and friends that little bit more daring.

  31. zalame Says:

This is very sad, but Syria/Iran/Hezb were sloppy this time. Such a professional assassination is bound to leave some trails… which will be picked by the UN/Lebanese investigators.

On the other hand, the Hariri investigation is still (!) rolling with no real results, so should they really be worried?

I just hope this does not escalate into another round of civil war.

  32. Dom_inNZ Says:

No wonder there is so much sectarian violence in lebanon. I mean people crying over the death of a politican! Whats that about?

  33. antares Says:

Dom_inNZ @ 32: (I assume from your post name that you live in New Zealand) Be grateful you live in a country in which politics is not a matter of lifre or death.

  34. The Usual Suspect Says:

    Dom
c’mon- people cried when Kennedy was assassinated. Just because none of us are about to go shedding a tear when little Johnny Howard carks it, doesn’t mean we can begrudge others.

  35. scooter Says:

Dom, Helen Clarke and John “bonsai” Howard (he’s a little bush) were elected by people who were more concerned with the fact that they had to vote and the kids are annoying them while waiting to cast their ballot than that they might be killed for voting for the wrong person. They don’t have to worry about the fact that they are Protestant and the person behind them is Catholic/Muslim/Buddhist or whatever. Voting is about life and death in other countries, not about the loss of half an hour on a Saturday morning and every day I give thanks that this is the case where I live and I hope that all other disagreements aside, we pray/wish the innocent people of lebanon all the best. I’ve never met ordinary people, from anywhere, who didn’t think the same way about their families the same way that I think about mine. For all my ‘nuke them all attitude’ it only extends to arseholes, God/Allah protect the innocents of Lebanon. End rant.

  36. Geo Says:

Hezbollah and Nasrasshole were allowed to thrive and gain popular support in Lebanon. These proxies of extremist forces in Iran and Syria are taking over and the only hope the Lebanese have is if the hated Zionists or the war mongering United States steps in to halt the terrorist sponsoring states. This American is getting a little tired of nations wanting our help and then getting spit upon by the people we are trying to defend. Fight for your own freedom if you really want it. The problem is that there are more Lebanese that embrace extremism than those that wish a more moderate culture. Too many non Muslims in Lebanon have been driven out or killed by the religion of peace. Good luck, Iran will start another bloodbath within your country. Better to fight there than in Tehran.

  37. CajunKate Says:

#30 has it exactly right. The Dems victory and all of their statements since then referring to getting out of Iraq have emboldened these terrorists states. The world is going to pay an awful price because of this election.

  38. tommy Says:

No wonder there is so much sectarian violence in lebanon. I mean people crying over the death of a politican! Whats that about?

Actually, what is pathetic isn’t crying over assassinated politicians. It is politicians crying over themselves like Saniora did a few months ago. What a goddamn crybaby.

Somebody needs to frag Nasrallah in a bad way.

  39. mike Says:

#37, bullshit, this has nothing to do with the U.S. elections. This is going to happen no matter what the U.S. does. It’s the way it works and there is nothing you can do about it. After the next civil war in Lebanon there is going to be another war a few years later, it’s to tribal to function as a state.

  40. Vinny Says:

democracy in the arab world means kicking the shyte out of the opponents. Violence is the answer to what u want. We need Saddam back to restore order. The americans can’t because of human rights policies.

  41. Terrified Lebanese Says:

This is a very sad day for Lebanon.
Please for God’s sake, think for a second.what would HA benefit from this?????? are you kidding?? Unless they are TOTALLY stupid and have no brain cells they would not do something like that..come on.
This a clear attempt to get people rallied against each other, and drive the opposition into oblivion….come on. There is no way on earth HA would benefit from this.

and to the Non lebanese commentors, who are indulging in talk along sectarian lines. For God’s sake, we arleady have enough trouble we do not
need people working more on sectarian sentiments.

Please, Please, think about Lebanon. Do you truly believe that christians and muslims hate each other and still want to kill each other in Lebanon? does not each one of you have friends from different sects that you agree with on manythings more than people from your own sect. Please, Let us all try not to push things towards a civil war. I know that reasoning when we are outraged by the murder of a dear leader is not easy, but for the LOVE OF LEBANON Let us not throw accusations left and right, and let us stay away from war.

  42. Dom_inNZ Says:

    antares:

” Be grateful you live in a country in which politics is not a matter of lifre or death”

Indeed!…Anyway….I was recently told that Gamayel comes from an anceint mamonite family who can date themelves back to the 10th century in Lebanon and that he is fifth member in recent years to have been assassinated from that family. I can understand the frustrtaion but the tears…hmmmmm.

  43. Dom_inNZ Says:

“c’mon- people cried when Kennedy was assassinated. Just because none of us are about to go shedding a tear when little Johnny Howard carks it, doesn’t mean we can begrudge others”

Yer… I thought the whole “the worlds is in mourning” when Princess Diana died was weird and overblown. It seems anyone who remains on the cover-page of a Womans Day for over ten years is an automatic candidate for mass hero-worship. Pray don’t let brad and Angelina die in a jet boat accident in Ebiza, it would be a feeding frenzy for world media.

  44. Haroun El Poussah Says:

    Will the lebanese never learn?

  45. alexander6 Says:

I believe what a Christian Lebanese woman said, “The country is on its way to becoming a terrorist hell hole.”

  46. tommy Says:

    Will the lebanese never learn?

Will Muslims ever learn? First it was the Palestinians sparking a conflict in Lebanon and then it was the Shiites. Get rid of Islam and you would have a solution.

  47. CajunKate Says:

Sorry, Mike, but the Dems victory announced to the world that the leadership in the US Congress is for “cut & run”. Just read the great Obama’s latest remarks on Iraq and its crystal clear. By the way, nice language-I guess its a reflection of wha kind of person you are

  48. The Usual Suspect Says:

    Scooter
I believe that would have to be the nicest post I’ve ever read- ever.

    Dom
I’m a sooky sooky lala- I cry everytime I watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory eventhough I poke shit at it all the time. So I also cried when Diana died and eventhough I don’t know that much about Lebanon or its politics- I’ll probably cry when innocent people there die too. I’m pretty blessed and there’s not much in my life that brings me much sadness- but other people’s lives are daily struggles and the people of Lebanon look like they are facing a bleak future.

  49. BrooklynJon Says:

  51. Seraph Says:

Just saw the procession carrying the coffin on German TV. I always thought in the Arab world these kinds of things involve shooting AK-47s, shouting slogans and acting mad. I must have been mistaken…

  52. Alienated Says:

    Seraph:
Lebanese Christians don’t demonstrate at funerals with AK-47s… they leave that to the muslim hordes and their funerals/riots/revenge rants.

This hizb’allah assasination is further probing by the Islamofascists of Iran through their puppets in Syria to see whether the USA bites, as they know Israel sure won’t. If they destabilize the Lebanese government and have hizb’allah increase/dominate the next one, then Israel will have bleak prospects indeed, with only a recourse of using nukes at the bombardment which will surely occur on their land, with rockets coming from Gaza & Lebanon in a blitskrieg of terror.

  53. sandra Says:

    hey, i am christian lebanese,
to the non lebanese, i will guarantee you that there no tension among sects in lebanon it is among political parties, there are 2 main powers in lebanon and both of them are multi-secterian.
the problem of lebanon is foreign interference and when america and israel stop messing with us and the whole middle east we will be fine.
and stop saying that hezbollah killed him, coz all of you know about hezbollah as you know about alien presence in space, the truth isnt always obvious and clear, search for it, and search for it without predjudice, dont be blind by propaganda.
god bless lebanon and save him from the axis of evil israel and america and the arab leaders in saudi arabia , syria and iran.
