Stand up for Bahha’i rights

There is a Bahha'i rights demo tommorow. Hosam has the details:

Activists are holding a stand in front of the State Council in
Dokki, Saturday 16 December, 10am, in solidarity with Egypt’s Bahaai
minority, who are suffering state descrimination against them, that
includes refusing to issue any official documents to them, since
Mubarak’s “secular” government requires the religion of the citizen to
be mentioned on his/her ID cards. However, the Interior Ministry’s
computer can only process three entries: Muslim, Christian, Jew.

Bahaai’s cannot issue birth and death certificates, ID cards, or any govt document, since the Interior Ministry does not recognize they exist.

See you there!

The “religion” category on I.D.’s is so totally ridiculous to me. I can’t believe it. Can you?!

There is NOT A SINGLE REASON for requring “religion” to be on one’s I.D. It’s sole purpose is to help Egyptians discriminate based on religion. Period.

But then again we’re dealing with Egypt here where just about nothing makes sense and everything is ass-backwards….like the Ikhwan running around doing Crane kicks like Daniel Son trying to intimidate the few sane Egyptians left.

    Saudi Arabia here we come…

Is that true? Why don’t they just put

“Other” as an option. People could fill up whatever they want to.

The ability to demonstrate is the first sign of improvement. I hope the Bahhai of Iran could one day know this right and stop having to live in fear.

It really is a wonderful faith. I hope it grows.

@Egypeter, it IS ridiculous. Many countries have abolished this some time ago. Many after the Second World War (because you know why and as you are not Ahmadinedhad I do not need to explain that to you). It would be time for Egypt to also abolish this if they still have it.

I personally would like to go furter. I am serious with this and this is not meant to be cynical or sarcastic (honestly!). I would like that there are more options to chose from than just man and woman as sexe. There are e.g. hermafrodites who are neither of them (or both of them). There are man who’d rather be woman and woman who’d rather be man. Actually the whole sexe thing is not worth it. Not in passports, nor in resumes.

[...] At a time when young Arabs are being tossed into jails for writing down their thoughts on their blogs, it appears like the dream will stay deferred for a while. The least we could do though, till things get brighter, is speak up. We need to shout out that we want more rights. [...]
