Well, I don’t know what to say except, damn. One of the things that makes this somewhat confusing is that some folks automatically see this as Egypt going after the Muslim Brotherhood, so who cares? (sigh) Please keep us updated on this if you can. What a mess.

The United States of America has the following comment:

    Press Statement

    Egyptian Blogger Appeal Denied

The United States is disappointed that the initial appeal of Egyptian student blogger, Abdel Karim Soliman, was not successful. He is the first Egyptian blogger to be prosecuted for the content of his remarks, and his conviction is a setback for human rights in Egypt. The role of freedom of expression is critical in a democratic and prosperous society. The right to freedom of opinion and expression, through any media, applies to everyone and is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. We were deeply concerned by his conviction and prison sentence for expressing his opinions. We note that Mr. Soliman can pursue a further appeal, and we will continue to closely monitor this case.

How weak does a government have to be to go after one youngster who happens to be a blogger?

    answer: Pathetically weak.

I take it that Abdel Karim Soliman blogged in both English and Arabic; is this correct SandMonkey?

A guy from the Vlaams Belang in Belgium has been charged with “Islamophobia.” He listened to some ayatollahs, muftis, and imams.

    Oh, geeze.

This is not the way to protect the country against the jihadis.

It is so sad to see what is happening to liberties. All these people who fight for human rights and you Egyptian bloggers of SM style are impressive. May your sharp eyes and critical and open minds be more numerous.
