Jokers and thieves

"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke,
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate,
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."

All along the watchtower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl,
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

All along the Watchtower, Bob Dylan

  1. I very much liked that this song was the trigger to initiate the programing for the last 4 cylons in Battlestar Galactica. Also it is my second favorite performance by Jimmy Hendrix. My first is “are you experienced.” As for Bob Dylan, who would have though his work would be so relavent 40 years later.

    are you stoned?

  3. I love Dylan and just happen to be listening to him now, “I Pity The Poor Immigrant”, but his newest album is awesome. Some people may not relate, but I just love “When The Deal Goes Down.”
“We eat and we drink, we feel and we think
Far down the street we stray
I laugh and I cry and I’m haunted by
Things I never meant nor wished to say
The midnight rain follows the train
We all wear the same thorny crown
Soul to soul, our shadows roll
And I’ll be with you when the deal goes down”

  4. Don’t lose heart SM.
If you can’t keep reporting from inside the insanity, then who?
Link arms with the others you know and stand fast.
Easy for me to say as I write this from my comfortable home…
My best wishes and deep appreciation to you and others that are trying to make a difference.

  5. You know, I didn’t realize until I saw it all written out like that how little sense it made.

  6. Now here’s a little story
To tell it is a must
    About an unsung hero
    That moves away your dust
    Some people make a fortune
    Other’s earn a mint
My old man don’t earn much
    In fact….he’s flippin’…..skint

Oh, my old man’s a dustman
    He wears a dustman’s hat
    He wears cor blimey trousers
And he lives in a council flat
    He looks a proper narner
In his great big hob nailed boots
He’s got such a job to pull em up
That he calls them daisy roots

Some folks give tips at Christmas
    And some of them forget
So when he picks their bins up
He spills some on the steps
Now one old man got nasty
    And to the council wrote
Next time my old man went ’round there
He punched him up the throat

Oh, my old man’s a dustman
    He wears a dustman’s hat
    He wears cor blimey trousers
And he lives in a council flat

Now one day while in a hurry
    He missed a lady’s bin
He hadn’t gone but a few yards
    When she chased after him
‘What game do you think you’re playing’
She cried right from the heart
    ‘You’ve missed me…am I too late’
‘No… jump up on the cart’

Oh, my old man’s a dustman
    He wears a dustman’s hat
    He wears cor blimey trousers
And he lives in a council flat
Next time you see a dustman
    Looking all pale and sad
Don’t kick him in the dustbin
It might be my old dad

Hey SM, thanks for posting the lyrics. There were a couple of lines I didn’t know and my drummer wants to rehearse it this weekend. What great timing!

  8. I’m not sure if this post is profoundly portentious, or if I’m just associating the song with the podcast I was listening to when I read it.

The podcast was about the invasion of the Sea Peoples during the 12th century BC and the collapse of Bronze Age civilization.

Also interestingly, I’d always heard the line “plowmen dig my earth” as “they come and take my herb,” for some reason. Possibly because I listen to the Hendrix version.

  9. my best and likt it very much.

  10. Uncle Bob says:

Oh God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son”
Abe says, “Man, you must be puttin’ me on”
    God say, “No.”
    Abe say, “What?”
God say, “You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin’ you better run…”
Well Abe says, “Where do you want this killin’ done?”
God says, “Out on Highway 61.”

I prefer Jokerman. But thieves are also those who buy materials for a good purpose, so they tell their supplier, and use it for a very bad purpose.

But the power of Karma is omnipresent.

SEWAGE FLOODS IN NORTH GAZA – metal purchased from Israel that was supposed to be used re-enforce or repair the underground canals were used, instead, to build rockets to kill Israelis.

KARMA SAYS: IN YOUR FACE ( literally). Roads and homes in Palestine are now full of s#%t – just like their leaders.

And… where to fire the rockets?. Fields are also covered with s&^t.

Families of Palestinians have lost all of what little they had. But leaders of Hams and Fatah still have their millions in Swis accts.

Thousands will get sick and possibly die- especially newborn babies.

Story is nowhere to be found on electricintifada.net, aljazeera or BBC.com.

Why is that? Sorry hard to blame Jooooz for this one.

  15. Hey, Dylan blew me away when I was 14. I remember waking up one morning and turning my beside radio on to my first ever hearing of “Like a Rolling Stone”. Man, that was cool!!!

But I must admit, some of his lyrics were a bit, hm, weird. Like the ones you have posted, Sam. What the heck are you trying to tell us?

  17. The Hendrix version was so much better than the original. One of my favorite Hendrix songs along with “Voodoo Child” and “Hey Joe.”

  18. Completely off topic, but an interesting read

  25. It was a pretty big year for fashion, a lousy year for rock ‘n roll
The people gave their blessings to crimes of passion
It was a long dark night of the collective soul
And I was somewhere out on Riverside in the El Royale Hotel
When a stranger appeared in a cloud of smoke
Seemed like I knew him all too well
He said, “Now that I have your attention
“I’ve got something that I want to say.
“You might not want to hear it
“But I’m gonna tell it to ya anyway.”
He said, “You know, I’ve always liked you, boy
“‘Cause you were not afraid of me
“But things are gonna get mighty rough
    “Here in Gomorrah-by-the-Sea.”
He said, “It’s just like home it’s so hot I can’t stand it
“And my fine seersucker suit is all soaking wet.”
And the hills are burning and the wind is raging
And the clock strikes midnight in the Garden of Allah.
