Quite possibly an innocent man hangs himself in prison

The news is calling him an Islamic militant, but his apparent suicide puts serious doubts to that theory. Islam is hugely against taking one's own life willingly, unless, u know, one martyrs himself during an act of Jihad (Read: suicide bombings). But to kill oneself in prison? Makes no sense to do so, since it meets no real purpose martyrdom-wise, if, you know, the man was as islamic militant as they are accusing him to be. Which means one of two things: 1) He wasn't an islamic militant and he was wrongfully accused and jailed, so he snapped and killed himself, or 2) The guy really is an islamic militant, but this was no suicide- the prison authorities took his life. Either way it sucks to be him!

It is my impression that these people would use any opportunity to kill themselves, especially if it makes their enemies look bad (in this case the Egyptian prison system), or if they can take a few lives with them in the process.

This guy might have been innocent, of course, we don’t know anything but what the authorities told us. But his suicide does not seem to indicate that he was.

If he was a terrorist and the prison authorities took his life, I don’t mind that much.

While laying around in Guantanamo getting fat there were a few suicides for the same reason Andrew in comment one said. We got a bad rap because of Abu Grahab, but everyone knows that doesn’t speak for usual treatment of prisoners by Americans. That’s why many Nazis rushed towards the Americans to surrender rather than be captured by the Russians after WW2. To say Islam is opposed to suicide holds about as much water as when immadinnerjacket said in front of either the UN or Columbia, “I’m a Muslim, I can’t lie”. Yea, right, immadinnerjacket, we can tell when you’re lying, it’s when you’re talking.

“bad mental state” must be the explanation ; why should it be not allowed to an islamic militant ? supermen are a fiction

To assume that because you’re Islamic means you can’t commit suicide is ridiculous. Christians believe suicide is a fast track to hell also, yet Christians commit suicide all the time. And who says it wasn’t martyrdom? What better way to prove that your Islamic buddies might be falsely accused and should be released than to do something that an Islamic militant “would never do”. A few suicides could result in a few releases. Those releases could result in the death of a hundred US or Iraqi troops at the hands of Islamic militants. That’s more than any suicide bomb ever accomplished.
