So says Zahi Hawas, who is taking things slightly personally:
"Tutankhamun was not black, and the portrayal of ancient Egyptian civilisation as black has no element of truth to it," Hawass told reporters.
"Egyptians are not Arabs and are not Africans despite the fact that Egypt is in Africa," he said, quoted by the official MENA news agency.
Not arab nor african? We are Neither? That's quite a statement.
Well, I am for not calling egyptians arabs (arabs invaded egypt after all), but the african we always were. Plus, even if we weren't, it's kind of hard to argue with the way the late King looks like:

Oh yeah. Doesn't look Black at all. I mean look at his features; they look totally white to me!

What are you on about? He’s as white as Jesus was. End of discussion.
Your an Asshole stupid and in pure denial u tart lol how can Jesus be white and have blonde hair when in the bible he clearly says hair of wool skin of dark bronze .. Really, what a fascinating debate.
While it is obvious and historically accurate that Egyptians ARE NOT “ARAB” (never were and never will be). I didn’t totally understand his comment about not being “African.” I don’t get it. How the hell are Egyptians NOT African, exactly? North Africans, fine…but we are African.
One thing for sure, and no matter how many ignorant Egyptians are out there, Egyptians are not Arab. How this ridiculous notion permeated Egyptian society still bothers me and we can all think Abdel Nasser and his goddamn Pan-Arabism that has managed to fool the Egyptian population. Sad
all the portrayals of kings in tombs do not have the characteristic black facial features…. eg wide nose, plump lips….
african geographically yes but ethnically? If we were african like the rest of africa is, then surely we’d be black. We’re not white, but we’re not black either.
uhoh identity crisis
SM seems relaxed about it but obviously EgyPeter is taking it way too personally
What is the definition of arab? if your definition is “Someone whose native language is arabic” then I guess egyptians and Lebanese clearly qualify.
If you have a different definition then you’ll get different results, but I am not sure there is one universal definition, some will add religion, some will add ancestry some will add geography …
For african it is much easier because the definition is clearly geographical so I guess there no debate, unless Hawas a special definition up his sleeve.
King Tutankhamun is the most famous of the pharaohs, and his mummy is estimated to be about 3000 years old. In 2005, three teams of scientists (Egyptian, French and American), in partnership with the National Geographic Society, developed a new facial likeness of Tutankhamun. The Egyptian team worked from 1,700 three-dimensional CT scans of the Pharaoh’s skull. The French and American teams worked plastic molds created from these – but the Americans were never told whom they were reconstructing.[55] All three teams created silicone busts of their interpretation of what the young monarch looked like. In the end, they identified the skull as:
that of a male, 18 to 20 years old, with Caucasoid features.[55

Loool so that’s ur conclusion ur an asshole stupid dumb I’m from North Africa Egypt to be exact and I’m African and I have a small nose and small lips am I white so now all Africans have to have big noses and big lips …. Some genetic studies suggest that modern Egyptians don’t have very close relations to most tropical Africans. [1] Populations from throughout the world were compared using extensive genetic data. The North African populations grouped with West Eurasian (European, Middle East) populations rather than sub-Saharan Africans.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_ancient_Egypt_(controversies)
No one grouped with u you mean u savages raped us u crackers she me laugh u cant stand us Africans but its mighty funny how ur men couldn’t keep their white lil red dicks out if blacks fucking rapist
How closely related is the average modern egyptian to those living in the country 5000 years ago? Considering the spread of Islam and it’s followers from the 700 century onward, it is fair to guess that most living egyptians are very arab indeed…
)
On a side note, I seem to recall seeing pictures in egytpian tombs depicting both dark-skinned and light-skinned people.
How about “Mediterranean”?
Really, there must have been gene flows up the Nile from sub-Saharan Africa, southward from Syria and Mesopotamia, and probably also from Italy and other parts of the Mediterranean. Think of all the trading that went on in Roman times. And what do sailors do in port?
How about the former large Greek population? They must have left some genes behind too.
Well, Anonymous Leb, I take it personally because it is a serious issue.
And, no, I don’t take language as the sole indicator of ethnicity (it plays a role of course, but is just one of many). I speak English as my first language and, last I checked, I’m not British.
Historically, it’s the Arabs that have wanted to be Egyptian not the other way around. Calling Egyptians “Arabs” is a new phenomena. And to be honest, I find it quite insulting that a country with 5000 years of glorious history has been abrogated by a culture that is only the last 1400 years…
*Don’t call me an Arab, I’m Egyptian!*
I agree with you EgyPeter, I am American woman married to an Egyptian man and he too always says “I am Egyptian , not Arab”. And he is Coptic also, so he has always told our kids that Copts are the Egyptians most closely related to the ancient Egyptians. I know when our children were young and in school in the USA they always argued with the American school teachers because February is Black History Month in the US and sometimes my kids said the teachers would put out posters and books about Egypt, as if that was part of Black American’s history. One of my sons once told his 4th grade teacher” his father is Egyptian and he is not black”. She told him “but your father is African and we are studying the accomplisments of African Americans”. I went and saw that teacher and told her that my kids ethnicity has nothing whatsoever to do with BlacK History Month. I said that the Ancient Egyptians are the Egyptian people’s history, not Black Americans. She said she never even thought of it that way. I was surprised, but she did get rid of all the references to Egyptian culture. I think of my Egyptian family more as Mediterrenaen ethnically. They are some of the most beautiful men and women I know. Thank God my kids all have the beautiful Egyptian eyes. Love’em too much.
sm, good post as always. You bring up an excellent point, but can’t a person be arab and still be egyptian??? I mean a mother or father or both from Saudi and have lived for 2 generations in Egypt. I would consider them egyptian of arab descend. Am I wrong???? It’s like native Americans are the true native born Americans, but we are all americans of Irish, English, French Saudi Arabian, lebanese, Greek, Turkish,Armania, Hungarian, German, Chinese, Japanese, Scotish, Welsh,Swedish, Norwegan, Spanish etc,,,, etc,, blood…..Point being we are all americans….not native but, americans. I would say it was an insult not to be considered an egyptian first and of arab decent second. If that was the case……make sense???? Then again, look at the Ethopians aren’t they considered black caucasians??? I ramble…..stay safe…..
I think it’s sad that black Americans have latched onto Egypt in an effort to build an accomplished history. Asians have the Great Wall of China and Ankor Wat. Whites have stonehenge at least. It’s a shame there’s nothing older than some colonial mansions in sub-saharan Africa, but it’s wrong to latch onto someone elses history to pump up black pride.
I feel you Perry. There are so many variables in African society. From top to bottom, they are made up of many different groups and tribes. There is a lot to be proud of. I love the band Steel Pulse. One of their songs is Rally Round the Flag. When I listen to the lyrics, I get really confused. They are about being proud Africans from Ethiopia. Then it talks about being made slaves. I was like, wait a minute, weren’t most slaves from the center or west of Africa? They weren’t captured by European slavetraders. From what I understand (if someone knows more than me about this, feel free to chime in):
The Atlantic slave trade peaked in the late 18th century, when the largest number of slaves were captured on raiding expeditions into the interior of West Africa. These expeditions were typically carried out by African kingdoms, such as the Oyo empire (Yoruba), Kong Empire, Kingdom of Benin, Kingdom of Fouta Djallon, Kingdom of Fouta Tooro, Kingdom of Koya, Kingdom of Khasso, Kingdom of Kaabu, Fante Confederacy, Ashanti Confederacy, and the kingdom of Dahomey. Europeans rarely entered the interior of Africa, due to fear of disease and moreover fierce African resistance.
Anyways, they also talk about how, they used to dress like kings and that they were the conquerer of lands and seas. Forgive, me, but history doesn’t point to this at all. Be proud of “black” African history by talking about Masai people or the Zulu. Don’t steal history from the Eqyptians.
When it comes to Black African history, the Nubian civilization should always be taken on account. Very advanced in its time, ruins available in Sudan and other nearby countries should you like to investigate, rivalled Egypt militarily for a long time, and so on…
“look at his features; they look totally white to me! ”
- hmmm, they look more like, golden to me.
Hi R. Elgayar.
Nice to hear that at least your children know their identity. The whole African-American thing is just as puzzling as the Arab thing. Ya know, I sometimes see African-Americans wearing all this Ancient Egyptian bling and I am just as confused with that association as I am with the Arab issue.
And it goes one step further. It’s not just Copts that are not “Arab” but it’s Egyptian Muslims, as well. They too are genetically no more “Arab” than their Christian countrymen…they just may be too blinded by their faith to understand this logic.
And I agree with you, I consider Egyptians to be much more “Mediterranean” than “Arab” or “African.” And we have quite a few mixed babies in my church that are absolutely beautiful…I’m sure your kids are the same
Hi EgyPeter,
Shukran gazelan habibi, yes I am predjudiced when it comes to Misryin. Behebbhum kitir. They are the most warm loving people and all 3 of our grown children are well aware of their very rich heritage. They are very proud Egyptian Americans. My husband’s family says I am an American wiith an Egyptian heart. And now my daughter has a fiance in Cairo,so one day I will have a beautiful grandchild who is more Egyptian than her mama.haha Take care. Oh and Sandmonkey keep up the great writing I just discovered you and have enjoyed reading your archives so much. I just returned from Cairo a month ago and visit there regularly and I so understand your frustration there. Keep up the good work.
R.Elgayar
Hi EgyPeter,
shukran gazelan habibi. Yes, my children are all grown now but they were raised with an appreciation for their rich heritage. My daughter has a fiance in Cairo, so I look forward to one day having a grandbaby that is more Egyptian than it’s mama (haha). But really, Misryin are the most loving, warm people. Ana behebbhum kitir. And SM, keep up the great writing. I just discovered your blog and have enjoyed reading your archives. I just returned from a visit with family in Aug. and I so sympathize with you all there. Take care.
R. Elgayar
Didn’t mean to be so reptative, I didn’t see the first post and thought it didn’t go through.
Sorry. R.Elgayar
Didn’t Qaddafi say something to the effect he was sick of arabs and Libya would now be african?
Egypeter ,i do agree with you ,am an egyptian born in q8 and lived there ,as a kid my parents never really told be to be arab more than egyptian or vice versa ,i saw myself just as egyptian arab ,when i got older and started geeting curious about my history through the internet ,all i could find was stuff like today egyptians are arabs ,they don’t have the ancient egyptian blood ,to copts site saying that copts are the real ancient egyptians and muslims are just arabs invaders .all that bullshit just made me stop reading about ancient egypt and just embrace arabicity(new word).the point is everybody from goverment to the media are causing this phenomena
about the egyptian frescos
“Champollion : «”Les Égyptiens se sont représentés comme les Nubiens, ce qui ne pouvait être autrement ”
“the Egyptians represented themselves as Nubians, it couldnot be else.”

Perry,
if he did, it would have been under american pressure,
but I doubt that he did anyway, that would not be very clever from his part; and one should know how kind of fox he is
Ghaddafi has been promoting himself as the leader of all the Africans for years. It is just his usual craziness. He is no more African than Putin is. I don’t think the real Africans take much notice of him.
Libya is a Mediterranean country like Egypt.
It is only since the arrival of Islam and the Arab Empire that the Mediterranean has been so divided between its north and south. Naturally, it is one economic and cultural region.
I suppose the problem is the naming of continents in the atlases. The natural boundary between Africa and the north is the Sahara, not the Mediterranean.
But we are moving into a world where everyone lives everywhere, and there will be more and more mixture of genes. Which is a good thing, so long as skin colour doesn’t get used as a class indicator.
I wonder why many people are so obsessed with race? Many scientists today say that the whole three-race theory is not scientifically valid.
It saddens me how so many Egyptians ignore the fact that Egypt today is among the most backward nations on earth by trying to relate to an ancient culture, one that normally did not respect basic human rights.
Egyptians had to worship their leaders, and among them of course is Fer3awn, whose acts with Moses (peace be upon him) and Bani Israil are an example of Kufr and injustice.
There’s a very, very big difference between regarding the Pyramids, for example, as a significant early human architectual accomplishment, and actually taking pride in forcing thousands or poor people to build a humongous tomb for their leader. The second, is what many Egyptians do.
And to add to the irony, they’re trying too hard to distance this culture from anybody daring to steal the “glory.” Specially those evil black people, since you know, skin tone means a real lot.
According to the US census we’re white, yet Egypt isn’t exactly an oasis of free speech, nor are Egyptians making a new contribution to humanity everyday. Quit being obsessed with the past, and start realizing what miserable present Egypt is going through.
Omar (radeya Allah 3anho) said that Muslims will go through mathala when they seek pride through anything other than Islam. This statement is proving true everyday.
elgayar, sweet. glad you think we re a good looking race coz the general concensus is that God missed us out when he was handing out good looks. We couldn’t have it all. The big egyptian nose is a cultural attraction, donchyaknow. Our only redeeming feature is that we tend to have pretty eyes, apart from that it’s down hill. Lebanon is the place to go for beautiful people but they do have an annoying accent, meneeh meneeh!
btw, are comments being moderated? this is serious indeed
Core samplings were done maybe twenty years ago from the sea bed of the Mediterranean. They found that the Sea had emptied and filled six times because of global cooling and heating. The last time it had completely filled was about ten to twelve thousand years ago. Thousand of years to fill and thousands of years to empty and hundreds of thousands of years to do it at least six times. Someone used the term Mediteranean and they may not be too far off the mark. During the last global cooling period water levels would have been at their lowest for the previous ten to twelve thousand years. Northern Africans and Southern Europeans may have had easy easy ways to get back and forth by land. There may even be settlements that lie at the bottom of the Sea that gradually were submerged when the last global warming period started. Hence the folklore story of Noah and the flood.
I saw the Tut exhibition when it opened in DC back in ’76 and since I live in Philadelphia I saw it again while here. The Tut show closed this past Sunday.
Anna
glad you think we re a good looking race coz the general concensus is that God missed us out when he was handing out good looks
Is this the consensus among Egyptians? Beauty is very subjective, and outsiders will always find ‘the other group’ exotically attractive.
Why are Lebanese considered attractive? Just curious about Middle-eastern beauty standards.
In my opinion, the ugliest folks are the Australian aborigines. Every group has both attractive and unattractive people but these people are all homely. I know its not a very nice thing to say … but there you have it. They probably think Westerners are equally ugly!
Oh Anna,
I love those big noses!!
r.elgayar
lolol glad someone does otherwise we’d be an extinct species….
toady,
you didn’t have to requote the depricating comment toady, once is enough already! let’s jus hope there are no abos who read this blog, i hear they have good revenge rituals
lebanese are generally the most beautiful people on the earth. Everyone in egypt knows that lebanese people are hot! they have the lovely big pretty eyes with pretty eyelashes (a recognised sign of beauty the world over) and facial features that are in proportion; good diversity in that they can have dark hair or light coloured hair and are nicely tanned naturally. They are also usually impeccably groomed which only serves to accentuate their beauty. That’s all physically speaking but ofcourse as we non shallow people know, beauty is not just skin deep!
Is Negro a bad word?
Unfortunately Lebanon is also the capital of cosmetic enhancement. So I guess you can call surgically enhanced beauty as being beautiful.
Personally, I find Lebanese women wear too much make up.
14. Melissa in NorCal:
About african slaves from Ethiopea – no, they would not have been captured and sent to the americas as slaves. As you say, these were mainly western africans, as central africa was more or less impossible to cross. They were, however, taken as slaves by arabs from the peninsula, so they do have slavery in their history, up untill quite recently in fact…
25. Don Cox:
When you say the north, I take it you are refering to Europe? Nope, the mediterranean is definately the natural border, at least since the punic wars! Sahara might be a border too, but that’s another story…
26. Fady:
Don’t sweat it – many people are proud of their history regardless of it’s nature. Italians are proud of the roman empire, despite it’s aggresive and violent expansionism. Scandinavians are proud of the vikings, despite their numerous aggressions against their neighbours.
Garner;
Unfortunately Lebanon is also the capital of cosmetic enhancement. So I guess you can call surgically enhanced beauty as being beautiful.
The same has been said about Venezuela. Those ladies win lots of international beauty contests. I hear they go to pageant training school and if it’s decided they need some ‘adjustment’, it’s off to the cosmetic surgeon.
I notice that middle-eastern and Latin American women wear lots more make-up in general. A fashion thing, I guess. During the 1980s American women wore heavier makeup than they do today – just look at the movies made back then. I don’t care for the overly made up look – too greasy looking – but to each their own.
EGYPETER YOU FAKE. I will prove to you & everybody that you are a mislead Jew and not an Egyptian nor an Arab. If you are then understand this yabn elk sharmouta ya kauzzir yabn el kaizzira yabn el metnaka, dehna han tala mayteen ahl omak yabn el ahba if you try and pull this shit here like you do on facebook mr. AJAY mitnak Peter.
Case closed
I don’t think that language is appropriate for a discussion “Hamra Bardo”…
Just to make a point clear. Copts are the ONLY group that could be considered ENTIRELY Egyptian ethnically, as they did not relocate, convert, or marry to Muslims (Arab or not). Its difficult to say whether or not most Muslim Egyptians are ethnically rooted in the country of Egypt, as many married among Arabs that entered the country during the Arab Conquest. The only Muslims that are most likely originally from Egypt would be the Nubians, who mostly converted to Islam during the times of conquest.
I hope this clarifies the point about Egyptians. Its not about the language, its about the ethnic roots.
Gomer,
lebanese are renowned for their natural beauty, refuting that could possibly denote jealousy.
What is shisha?
Sorry, this was supposed to be in response to that protest and
Ramadan story.
Identity crisis indeed!
I’m still not so sure Negro is an acceptable word…
African American or Black is what we say in MidAmerica…
I think “Colored” is unacceptable , here, as well.
I have a lot of African American frends…why can’t we just agree on that..
African American, and then Egyptian, and then Mideastern…
I guess it is a little bit like America: The South, Noth, West, East..
each region has a specific/common identity
Egypt was never “Mediterranean” that is the smooth over term to wipe the word Pharaoh or Arab from the map.
Egypt was always the Pharaoh land and then was invaded by Arabs and we all speak Arabic in Egypt , we didn’t come from the peninsula but we speak Arabic.
80% of Egyptians are Muslims and speak ARABIC and 20% Christians and speak ARABIC.
R.Elgayar,
You need to pick a better school for your children and also protect yourself from the Coptic Orthodox Syndrome
Anna,
If you are from Mid America you should know why Negro is not an acceptable word as for black it is describing someone based on their color so I won’t agree with that one either.
In my opinion African-American, Italian-American, Arab-American is the way to go.
Why is it a puzzle to figure out that people are not suppose to be called by their skin color?
All of humanity came out of black Africans. We are all offsprings of the African blacks. Adam and Eve, Adam and Hawa, Lucy ( the oldest female) whichever way you look at it, we all came from the same source. When God or Allah created the first human pair, they were black. The ancient Egyptian, the Ethiopians and the Nubians were all Africans. There are more genetic variations among Africans than the rest of the world combined. Africans come in many phenotypes. The Zulu, the Khoi-San, Fanti, Fulani etc. are all African.
Anna, check out the features of the Sphinx-the broad African type, not like the Tutsi, Waadabi or Masai, who have a more narrow or elongated features.
All types can be found among the mummies. Also take a closer look at the features of King Tut’s mother.

Ancient Greek history has been latched on to by most Caucasians, even though the ancient Greeks saw themselves as different and superior to their northern neighbors. Racism and White supremacy is why people go back into
connecting to the distant past. Do not buy into the racist lie and propaganda.
The bottom line is that Egypt is a backward country, and if there was one decent Computational genetics department in any Egyptian University, all this debate would’ve been settled in an elegant scientific & fascinating way.
To end all of the above arguments, Africa is a BLACK Continent and those who are living there who are not black are not real Africans, they migrated there from somewhere else. And the Pyramids were built by the Africans, the sphinx itself has the features of a Black person, end of story.
)
{p. 1} What Were the Egyptians?
In contemporary descriptions of the ancient Egyptians, this question is never raised. Eyewitnesses of that period formally affirm that the Egyptians were Blacks. On several occasions Herodotus insists on the Negro character of the Egyptians and even uses this for indirect demonstrations. For example, to prove that the flooding of the Nile cannot be caused by melting snow, he cites, among other reasons he deems valid, the following observation: “It is certain that the natives of the country are black with the heat….” {endnote 1: The History of Herododus, translated by George Rawlinson. New York. Tudor, 1928, p. 88.}
To demonstrate that the Greek oracle is of Egyptian origin, Herodotus advances another argument: “Lastly, by calling the dove black, they [the Dodonaeans] indicated that the woman was Egyptian….” {endnote 2: Ibid., p. 101.} The doves in question symbolize two Egyptian women allegedly kidnapped from Thebes to found the oracles of Dodona and Libya.
To show that the inhabitants of Colchis were of Egyptian origin and had to be considered a part of Sesostris’ army who had settled in that region, Herodotus says: “The Egyptians said that they believed the Colchians to be descended from the army of Sesostris. My own conjectures were founded, first, on the fact that they are black-skinned and have woolly hair….” {endnote 3: Ibid., p. 115.} Finally, concerning the population of India, Herodotus distinguishes between the Padaeans and other Indians, describing them as follows: “They all also have the same tint of skin, which approaches that of the Ethiopians.” {endnote 4: Ibid., p. 184.}
Diodorus of Sicily writes:
{quote} The Ethiopians say that the Egyptians are one of their colonies which was brought into Egypt by Osiris. They even allege that this country was originally under water, but that the Nile, dragging much mud as it flowed from Ethiopia, had finally filled it in and made it a part of the continent…. They add that from them, as from their authors and ancestors, the Egyptians get most of their laws. It is from them that the Egyptians have learned to honor

I am going to be blunt to all the arabs and egyptians and whatever. you are a mongrel group. I don’t say that out of disrespect. It is that someone needs to just tell you the truth and you need to accept it. You middle easterners are mostly a group of mixed races african, european and asian. You want to act like you are so distant from black. But everyday I see you and some of you have nappier hair than I do. I am african american. Your african ancestors were invaded by europeans and that is how you became to look as you do today accept it and get over having that dreaded african blood in your vains lol. Why do you think whites call you sand niggers, towel head niggers and coon dunes. And the only reason why america lets you put down your white because of your location. If they made you put down black or colered then it would connect blacks to the holy land and we can’t have that now lol.
His Magesty Neb Keferu Re, Lord of Manifestastion of Light, regiened
for aprox. 9 years. He was by inheritance, from Amenhotep III, the
ruler of a vast Kingdom sretching from Mesapotamia to the fifth cataract
of the Nile (Northern Ethiopia). Thus covering the most populus areas of the earth at the time. The masks him from his tomb are masterpieces of
goldsmiths art, according to Carter, whom was able to view the remains
in a less deteriorated state, they portray an excelent likness of the king.
They portray whom he was, a great Afro-Asiatic king of with a spirit of
serene contenance. For those concerned with color, the enamel work
on his throne is a good example. Many of the ancient kings of Egypt
would be concidered “black” now and have some of the same detail in their
features as modern day black americans. People should not find it offensive
as part of our cultural celebration, there are very sound historical reasons
for these similarties. Never the less Twt ankh amen is also semtic -asiatic.
He was a direct decendent of
Tuthmosis III a decendent of the court of Mesapotamia. I find it ironic
that a king whom was faced with severe racial, religious and cultural
divisions in his time is being argued about in this manner today.
African American, negroe, colored, black are all by-words and proverbs according to the bible. YAH said we would be known as these words as part of the punishment and affliction that we would have to endure for turning away from Him. We are the true descendants of the biblical ISRAELITES. The bible is our history book from genesis to revelation. If you read all of the comments, everyone is anti-black, although there is no such thing as black or white. Europeans made up these terms. Every nation has their biblical name in the bible. Asians=moab; east indian=elam; arabs=ishmael; african americans; ISRAELITES; whites; edomites; etc. Ancient Egyptians; hamites. We descend from SHEM, and they descend from HAM. Israelites are YAH’s chosen people that is why we are hatedthe world over. Jesus Christ as well as all of the bible characters were black skinned Israelites. You would have to be literally insane to think that Jesus was white. He wasn’t arab either. The bible gives numerous examples of what Jesus and all of the prophets looked like. All people’s ancestry can be traced back to the first people who were so-called black. You could never get black from white because white is recessive. But black is dominant, and therefore, produces all of the colors. Most of the world is under satan’s deception. satan knows once the truth comes back into the earth, his time is over. When you look out into the world today, this process of truth has already started. In the bible, it says that earth is given into the hand of the wicked. Who is ruling planet earth? We know who they are.
I am egyptian and way before any invasion we are African
