7 year old boy engaged to 3 year old girl

In Afghanistan . The boy is the first cousin of the girl, whose father agreed to the engagement since his sister never had any girls and wanted one, so he decided to give her his 3 year old as a present. This is apprently very common, even to the point that some children are decreed to marry each other even before they are born. You would think that the society, men and women, would be against this entire tradition, since it sucks to be spoken for before you are four, but it's still very popular. The men who end up marrying those women who are selected for them since they are children  can always marry a second and third wife if they are not happy, so they have really very little to complain of. It's the women who get stuck, many of which opting to commit suicide to end what must be a very miserable existence.

Oh, and the UN estimates that 43% of all Afghani marriages were like this one. Warms your heart up, doesn't it?

  1. You see? There are SOME drawbacks to being the gender with the boobs…

  2. You’d think the parents would at least wait until they see if the child in the arranged marriage was going to make a good living or at least wasn’t butt ugly.

  3. Pre-arranged marriages are bad enough, but pre-arranged to your cousin????? Disgusting!!!!!

  4. Jeezus, what can you say about a culture (muslim) where inbreeding is common? I read it is a huge problem in Saudi Arabia too. The % of mental defectives in Islamic countries is way higher than in the west due to this inbreeding, and of course inbreeding increases fractionalization.

No culture can survive and prosper (without un-earned oil money that is) if it doesn’t have an inbreeding taboo.

  5. I’m still having a hard time believe that it’s permissible for a father to give away his daughter as a gift. I don’t think it should be acceptable in any culture for a parent to give away a child as though they were property and not human beings. Plus, the child is only three years old and promised to her first cousin. This girl has been put in a situation that could possibly lead to a very unhappy future.

i just have to say that you would have to have lived in a country for a while to realy know what their culture and customs are. just because it is not common in your country does not mean it is wrong. if you think its wrong then i can make a list of worst things thats happeneing in your country possible in your own life as well.
