Breaking News: Islam el Nabih gets 3 years in Jail

The Impossible took place today. Justice was served! The Police Officer who sodmoized Emad El Kebeer by sticking a broomstick up his ass  and videotaped him on his cellphone and was put on trial for it just got a sentence today: 3 years in an egyptian prison. This, as far as I remember, is a first. A Police Offiver held accountable. Who knew that was possible?

Hopefully they will do to him in Prison what he did to Emad.

Glad to hear it. If bloggers like yourself hadn’t been so active in publishing the story, they probably would’ve gotten away with it.

Hopefully they will NOT do the same to him. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Torture is wrong, full stop – including torturing torturers.

I read that online today and give credit to bloggers who posted the videos online! This is certainly a sign that the Egyptian govt. is paying attention to what is being put online and that bloggers like yourself are exerting influence in a positive way. Maybe this will make some officers in Egypt think twice now before doing something this stupid.

I hope they do to him EXACTLY what he did to that innocent prisoner.

He deserves every bit and maybe it’ll be a deterrent to others. Small step forward for justice in Egypt…

Doing to him what he did to Emad is not a solution, and is definitely very wrong.

And three years / LE 2000 for something like that is far from justice, at least I would think so if I were Emad, but its an improvement anyway.

While I think the blogosphere is to thank for this one, I’m not sure it was the correct thing to do to spread the video in the way it was. Many people wouldn’t want MILLIONS see them sexually abused by a policeman. It would have been much better if Wael Abbas (blogger who originally posted the video online) sent it to reputable human rights organizations and made a serious issue out of it without actually spreading it online.

Anyway I hope Emad feels better now, at least what he went through wasn’t completely in vein.

EgyPeter, can you really not grasp the idea that torture is wrong, both morally and practically?

While such a landmark ruling is definitely encouraging, three years and LE2000 is hardly a fair settlement. If this case was here in Canada the state would be cashing out in the 5 to 6 figure sum.

Big props go out to Emad. Given the social stigma associated with such cases in Egypt, it’s great that he decided to fight this out publicly. It must be such a trying struggle for his family and loved ones.

Finally, the fact that the first case to get such a ruling, is one of considerably high exposure where the evidence was practically irrefutable, only indicates how many instances of such brutality exist and have not been addressed due to their lack of impact on public opinion. I’ll believe the government is dealing with this issue seriously when i start hearing of in house cleaning that is not instigated by public opinion pressure.
