    Here it is, Patrick:

Egypt holds army officers for ‘plotting Israel attacks’

    By AFP
    First Published: January 13, 2008

CAIRO: Two Egyptian army officers are among 14 alleged Islamists arrested on charges of planning attacks in Israel, one of their lawyers said on Saturday.

The 14 were held following raids in Cairo and Alexandria on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast in November, said Muntazer Al-Zayat, a frequent defender of alleged Islamists.

No official announcement of the arrest of the two army officers and 12 civil engineers was made at the time. A security source could not immediately confirm the men, all unnamed, were being held.

Security services claim the men formed an Al-Qaeda linked cell and planned to launch unspecified attacks on Israel from Egypt, according to Zayat.

The authorities also claim that documents seized during the police raids showed the suspects’ alleged involvement in plotting attacks, he said.

SM, do you believe the story?

It looks fishy to me. The article is simultaneously claiming that there hasn’t been any official confirmation, and at the same time it’s quoting “the authorities”. Maybe it’s just a translation problem.

At least they didn’t get quietly released as soon as they were caught.

He, the egyptian parliament isn’t much for taking critiscism to heart, it seems:

I particularly like the part about the parliament threatening to cut relations with the EU if the resolution is passed… For some reason I don’t think it’ll be europe that’ll fare the worse from such a move! 😀

Now if they’d only do something about those gazillions of rockets, weapons and cash flowing across the border into Gaza…sigh.
