Are you done?

All of you noticed that I haven't updated this blog in a while, and many of you wonderd if I was ok. I was, I was just too disgusted with what was going on in my comment section to even contemplate writing here at all. I have never seen this much hate in my life, and I am accustomed to hatemail and vicious comments from trolls. This had reached such a level that I am seriously contemplating closing down the comment feature. I don't want to, and my belief in free-speech compels me not to delete the comments or ban those who are doing it, but if this goes on I will shut this whole thing down.

If you have valid points of discussion, please have them out in the open. If you are going to use colorfull language to make the point, then please do use them, but NO PERSONAL INSULTS OR BIGGOTTED COMMENTS, oh, and if you have a conflict with another comment poster, then please, exchange e-mails, and commence to hate each other in back and forth e-mail. I don't care who started it, I don't care if they deserved your response or not, I don't even care if you think each other to be skidmarks in the underpants of humanity, I don't want to see it. KEEP IT TO YOURSELVES.

Hope we understand one another!

I’ve noticed that in general, only the first twenty or so comments on any blog post (not just yours) are worth reading. After that, people start insulting each other, the monomaniacs start posting on their pet obsessions, and the ALL CAPS and text-speak crowd arrive.

So my suggestion, if it can be done, is to close commenting after 20 on each post.

A good gardener needs to prune his crops for the best yield, a good parent needs to encourage good behavior with mild punishment, it seems a bit of prudent censorship by the removal of the personal attacks and blatant outrageous fits of cursing posts wouldn’t be seen as a limitation to the discussion. If the person continues I don’t think anyone would blame you for temporarily banning the perp. Everyone has a right to voice their opinion in a reasonable way, just my two cents worth.

Finally. I am glad to hear you are OK.

    On subject of comment quality.

It is true there was particularly stupid troll for a while using all sorts of techniques to derail the conversation.
But thankfully we all were able to come to our senses and troll had no choice but to leave.

Although, I think some kind of rudimentary protection at least against using your name is in order.

Why not moderate the comments? We all know there are irresponsible commenters out there. Sandmonkey, this is YOUR space, you own it, you control it. It’s more than fair to set standards of civility. We are guests in your house; if you tolerate bad behavior, your good guests will not feel welcome.

I really enjoy your blog and your point of view, please don’t disappear.

Wow, how did I miss that one? I guess because I don’t see comments in my RSS feed. Ugh, I can’t stand stupid people… you can set me up to be your comment moderator and that will keep you away from any emotional drain…

Thanks SM. It was getting pretty dicey there. I had to quit reading it – checked back later and it was three times worse. Gave up.

Good to have you back. I was almost going to annoy you with e-mails just to verify that it was just the blog that had gone silent.

As the “owner” of a blog, you should just delete anything that you find unacceptable for your blog. You can explain or not explain. I use a version of “three strikes and you’re moderated.” For particularly bad comments, it’s one strike equals deleted and banned. I don’t have time to deal with repeat crap.

Free speech is imperative but it’s not censorship as an individual to decide what is and is not welcome on your blog. If someone really wants an open forum, point them to Blogger or WordPress and they can get their own blog for complete freedom.

Gonna be pretty hard for him to do that, since the worst troll on his blog is one of his best friends.

Craig, let’s not start it again, please. Besides, you have no proof.

I only hope should troll ever come back we will show total ignorance and move on with our business.

Craig, You know I don’t take sides. But do me a favor, let it go. Whatever the fight between the two of you is, no matter what both of you think of each other, Just don;t bring it here. Argue with her about her points and logic (like I do) but let’s not make it personal. Same goes to you twosret.
As for the imposter of 700,000 identities, well, as you have seen so far pretending to be me doesn’t work. People can smell the phoniness in ur posts a mile away. Troll around as u like, I love me a crazed non-fan, but stop being not funny. I hate people with bad sense of humor and who mangle up a joke. If you are gonna satirize me or what I am supposed to represent, then please, do it well. And be funny. This is why I miss Magdee. He was infuriating, but damn it, the boy made me chuckle. Nobody likes a bad comedian, boy, so pucker up or sod off.

Please explain what you mean by believing in freedom of speech. You have deleted and changed many comments over the past three years since I have been reading. If someone mentions that you had sex with someone, it’s gone in a split second. The second time too. If one of your dear friends is upset by a benign but hurtful comment, you change it. If one of your dear friends makes arrangement to do something illegal with someone else on a thread that she thinks no one else is reading and she is found out, you delete the arrangement. When I bring it up at a later point you delete my words. Yet, when some Jew hater promotes genocide (EEE and others) you let it stand. When someone threatens others with violence, you let it stand. Sorry if you feel I am “beating a dead horse” but this double standard in how you view freedom of speech needs to be pointed out. Either you believe in it or you don’t! If you want to learn about freedom of speech go read up on Mark Steyn, Ezra Levant and the Human Rights Commission over here in Canada.

Secondly, I am sure that you are well aware that if you closed your comments section people probably would stop reading your blog. There is nothing more boring than a blog where you can’t leave comments.

    August 14, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Karen #15 – I read the blog and rarely read comments, or leave any. SM’s blog is interesting without the comments. And, it’s his blog. He runs it. He pays whatever it costs to have this spot. He spends his time updating it and writing for it. It’s his. He can do what he wants, as far as I’m concerned.

Who the hell gives a shit who SM has been fucking…..and what kind of idiot would post that about someone’s private life. If this kind of thing is going to be discussed I need to see pictures with SM clearly blackened out of them 😉

Tell me you’re not implying he’s an anti semite, because it would be laughable if you were.

Karen, I’ve been reading SM’s blog since the beginning and he’s NEVER been harsh on people; he’s quite lenient as a matter of fact.

And surely you understand the difference between a whackjob posting a political rant and a whackjob posting something damaging about someones private life. If some idiot posits his theory that the world is run by 12 Jews from a cave in Morocco, it’s stupid but harmless. If the same guy reveals the intimate details of SM’s life, or one of his friends, that poster needs to be shut down immediately. This isn’t a First Amendment issue.

Oh,and if you think SM is even faintly anti-semitic you clearly haven’t been reading his blog for very long.

Welcome back dude. I am happy to read your comments and crazy video suggestions. Ignore the ignorant and hateful. Or, delete them 🙂 . It is your blog. You do what you want.
    Again, welcome back.

I hardly think he is anti-semitic. If I did, I would have stopped reading long ago. I just think that some speech is freer than others at this blog 🙂
