Shoe Activism watch

Since the arab world seems really keen on becoming Shoe people, I am going to start a Shoe Activism watch. The First item comes from the egyptian parliament. During a "debate" over who is the bigger agent to Israel/Iran, a MB MP raised his shoe against an NDP MP that's very far from him, but didn't throw it. Hmm, I see a problem, which begets a question: if a shoe gets held in the hand, but doesn't get thrown, does it count as a sign of arab protest? Anybody knows the rules here?

Ponder on that until you have something better to do with your time, will ya?

Comments

  1. Hmm, I’d guess it would constitute a threat… That counts too, right?

  2. OJ Simpson says:

I think that the value of the shoes should be considered, when assessing the degree of insult. Throwing old worn out shoes just doesn’t say it like throwing a new pair of Bruno Maglis.

Does it count if you bring a pair to wear and one to go home in?
Does it count if you throw shoes you were going to throw away?
Does it count if you throw a old pair of your kids shoes?
Does it count if you don’t throw an actual pair? What if you throw a non-matching left and right shoe? Is it worse if you throw two left shoes? Or two right? Better get the Imams involved in this.

If you wear your shoes backwards (right on left foot, left on right foot), and I am increasingly willing to believe that this is quite common in the Arab world, does the magnitude of the insult change?

And what if the Juice should drop about a million pairs of shoes on Gaza. Oh my God! The horror! Oh, the humanity!

    It would be a Shoelocaust.

But seriously, just holding a shoe doesn’t count at all. The precedent for this is from the 1960′s at the UN, when Kruschev used his shoe to pound on the lectern during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Just waving the shoe around doesn’t count. As for the MB MP, it has now gone beyond parody. He takes off his shoe, stands up, and threatens some one who is across the room, with the pretend throw fake-out? He then sits down, puts his shoe back on. Point made. Arab debating at it finest and most profound.

Arab politics and religion discovers infantilism, keeps digging.

Why is it that so few of you can understand that it is Islam that has brought you to this?

  3. Thx for making me laugh, OJ! Brilliant Gaza antidote. Had almost forgotten why I still come to read here every day. And of course, SM, thanks for breaking yr blogging break!

So do the MBs members in the Egyptian paliament call each other; “sole-mates”!!?
